Valero Alamo Bowl Predictions: Baylor Bears QB Robert Griffin III Is in Trouble

Jeff GrantDec 28, 2011

The Baylor Bears (9-3) will take on the Washington Huskies (7-5) in the Valero Alamo Bowl Thursday night inside the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Oddsmakers certainly sent out inflated betting odds for this particular contest due to Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III winning this year's Heisman Trophy, but the public has driven up the number to as high as 10 on the Las Vegas strip.

Let's take a closer look at this intriguing game from a betting perspective.

Washington Huskies Head Coach Steve Sarkisian with Extra Time To Prepare

1 of 5

The Washington Huskies are a dangerous underdog Thursday night due to posting a 6-1 straight-up record under current head coach Steve Sarkisian when having more than a week to prepare for a game.

Since dropping a 2009 contest to the UCLA Bruins, the former USC Trojans offensive coordinator has rattled off six consecutive wins in this situation.

Bettors will be thrilled that he's covered the spread in his last six opportunities in this role as well.

Heisman Trophy Winners Burn Money in Bowl Games

2 of 5

Baylor Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III may have won the Heisman Trophy this year, but that doesn't mean he'll walk away with a double-digit victory Thursday night.

The last 11 players to walk away with the hardware and be favored by seven or more points have registered a terrible 1-10 against-the-spread (ATS) record.

Be careful in laying this type of number.

Washington Huskies as Bowl Underdogs

3 of 5

The Washington Huskies are 4-0 ATS in their last four bowl games when playing as an underdog, which makes them dangerous in this prime-time matchup on ESPN.

Last year's squad picked up a 19-7 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers as 11.5-point underdogs in the 2010 Holiday Bowl.

Baylor Bears Defense

4 of 5

The Baylor Bears ranked 114th in the country in allowing 478.3 yards per game, something that was hidden throughout the season by quarterback Robert Griffin III and the offensive unit.

Head coach Art Briles knows that no lead is safe and a back-door cover is a distinct possibility until the final whistle is blown.

Prediction

5 of 5

The Washington Huskies will be able to move the football in this game, possessing a balanced offensive attack with quarterback Keith Price and running back Chris Polk.

Baylor has already won its Super Bowl in bringing the Heisman Trophy to Waco, TX.

The Bears are also just 1-3 ATS when playing with two or more weeks of rest.

Don't be shocked if the underdog wins in outright fashion.

Pick: Washington Huskies (+10)
