Rockies Investigate After Report of Fan Yelling Racial Slur at Marlins' Lewis Brinson
Update: Steve Staeger of 9News in Denver reported on Monday that the fan was yelling the name of the team's mascot, Dinger.
The Colorado Rockies are investigating a fan believed to have used the N-word while Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson was at the plate Sunday.
"The Rockies have zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination, and any fan using derogatory language of any kind will be ejected and banned from Coors Field," the team said.
The slur was loud enough to be picked up on the television broadcast of the Rockies' 13-8 win.
While the slur was picked up by microphones, it went unnoticed by Lewis and the Marlins during the game.
“Neither Lewis, nor any other Marlins on the field or in the dugout, heard what was shouted,” Miami spokesman Jason Latimer told the Associated Press in a text. “We brought the matter to the attention of the Rockies. How the matter is being handled, I would have to defer to them.”
MLBPA executive director Tony Clark addressed the situation in a statement:
Five-time All-Star Adam Jones showed support for Brinson:
Jones has been in Brinson's shoes before, with the Boston Red Sox issuing an apology in May 2017 after he said he was called the N-word at Fenway Park.
Earlier in the year, unruly fan behavior was at the fore in the NBA. One fan dumped popcorn on Washington Wizards star Russell Westbrook, while another threw a water bottle at Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving.
In the latter situation, Cole Buckley was arrested and charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon.
Based on the Rockies' statement, officials from the team and Coors Field have yet to identify the fan who used the slur. The attendance for Sunday's game was 34,677.
While the Rockies referenced a potential ban for the fan in question, CNN's Brandon Griggs wrote in 2017 how stadium bans can be difficult to enforce.
