This will serve as a learning experience that the squad can build from. Just like against Wales, the US conceded AGAIN off a throw in. Today at times, they showed characteristics of a team lost under the lights of the stage. They had the US running circles.

  18. Alejandro Moreno @AleMorenoESPN

    1. Difference in efficiency & quality in front of goal was evident. 2. To no one's surprise #USMNT are better in attack with Reyna on the field. 3. Adams has been great, but must track runners top of the box. 4. #NED controlled the pace of the game without the ball. #WorldCup

McKennie: 24 years old Musah: 20 years old Adams: 23 years old What a World Cup they had. The USMNT's midfield is set for years to come 👏 https://t.co/9oJTfgtaFn

  20. Julien Laurens @LaurensJulien

The Dutch were just more mature, more experienced and more efficient. Tactically, their game plan worked. It’s part of the learning curve for this young US team. Please, also learn how to mark players!!

  21. Fifty Five One @FiftyFiveOne

Hard to say Berhalter got it all right there, but his critics certainly can’t claim much vindication. Reyna was poor and didn’t look fit. Neither center back nor Turner was at fault on the goals. #USMNT will rue individual mistakes from some of the team’s best players.

  22. Ives Galarcep @SoccerByIves

FINAL - Netherlands 3, #USMNT 1. It was going to take the USMNT's best to beat the Dutch, and they fell WELL short of their best. Credit to the Dutch, & Dumfries in particular. Goal & 2 assists for the Inter wingback. USMNT came out flat, looked tired, never recovered.

  23. Jack Pitt-Brooke @JackPittBrooke

Delighted for Louis Van Gaal, the last honest man left in football. Imagine if he won it for them!

  24. Jeff Rueter @jeffrueter

Disappointing shift today, and some lineup/tactical decisions worth questioning, but first: a fine tournament from a young #USMNT. Plenty to build off of for the next two or three cycles. Now go find that talismanic striker.

  25. Charles Boehm @cboehm

The USMNT got out of their group because they asserted control of the majority of those matches. They lost control of this one maybe 9 minutes in. Or maybe they never had it at all. LvG masterclass.

  26. Paul Tenorio @PaulTenorio

FINAL: #NED 3, #USMNT 1. The U.S. is headed home after being knocked out in the Round of 16. Overall, I think a lot of positives to take from the entire tournament. But still feels really disappointing how this game went today. Stay tuned to @TheAthleticFC for coverage...

  27. Phil McNulty @philmcnulty

Netherlands win 3-1. Bit of a scare for a few minutes but ruthless finishing puts them in the last eight.

  28. Get World Cup Football News @_GIFN

FT | Netherlands 3-1 USA Another clinical performance by LVG's Dutch side, where they exploited the opponent's weakness perfectly. A decent performance from the United States, but they simply came up short against a team which is just better than them overall.

  29. Zach Osterman @ZachOsterman

Think the US was fine. Good young players. Made the knockouts. Tyler Adams is massively class. Good on ‘em.

  30. David Ubben @davidubben

Honestly just looking forward to going to World Cup games in person in 2026.

  31. Wes Rucker @wesrucker247

Lost to a better team. Proud of the guys. Need a striker. Rest of the guts are there.

  32. Alejandro Bedoya @AleBedoya17

Same issues for a while. We are missing a reliable proper #9 that can occupy 2 centerbacks and threaten backlines. And gotta convert those high quality chances. Uncharacteristic to give up those 2 goals off of cutbacks into box but credit to Netherlands for that 1st goal.

  33. Graham Ruthven @grahamruthven

At least Haji Wright will be a good trivia answer

  34. Pablo Iglesias Maurer @MLSist

Imagine being that unmarked in the box. My god.

  35. Taylor Twellman @TaylorTwellman

    3 forwards on a 26 man roster. #USMNT

  36. Jeff Rueter @jeffrueter

Think that makes Denzel Dumfries the man of the match. Completely untracked by everybody at the far post. Brutal defending on these goals today.

  37. Phil McNulty @philmcnulty

Funny one. Pulisic's cross takes a deflection off Wright and loops in at the far post. 13 minutes left and knowing this World Cup.....

  38. James Benge @jamesbenge

Haji Wright knew about that goal later than someone watching the 4K iPlayer stream

  39. Do NOT Freak Out

Gregg Berhalter in the locker room at halftime: #FIFAWorldCup | #USMNT https://t.co/FDpBdjoS3s

  40. James Nalton @JDNalton

USMNT now one goal away from going from needing a complete overhaul of soccer in the country to having a strong platform from which to build.

  41. Ives Galarcep @SoccerByIves

Matt Turner DOUBLE SAVE!! The #USMNT goalkeeper goes full Matrix mode to deny the Dutch and keep it 2-0. Dutch smell the blood in the water and are pouring numbers to grab that third goal. 72nd minute, 2-0 Dutch

  42. Jeff Rueter @jeffrueter

Get Aaronson on against these tired Dutch legs, like, five minutes ago.

  43. Paul Tenorio @PaulTenorio

According to Transfermarkt, the last time Gio Reyna played (or at least started) as a No. 9 was in the 2019 U-17 World Cup in a 4-0 loss to ... the Netherlands.

  44. Zito @_Zeets

Subbing on Gio Reyna finally in this situation is hilarious

  45. Taylor Twellman @TaylorTwellman

Too much "in front" of Van Dijk....at some point the @USMNT need to find a way to get behind them so they "chase" so game opens up See the Dutch 1st goal if that makes sense.

  46. Rob Dawson @RobDawsonESPN

US have done well for large parts of that first half but the timings of those Netherlands goals are a killer. First one right after Pulisic had a great chance and then the second just before half-time after Dest had a decent opportunity. Long way back from here.

  47. Pablo Iglesias Maurer @MLSist

Absolutely devastating, man. Doesn't matter how much of the ball you have if you don't have any ideas.

  48. Ives Galarcep @SoccerByIves

It's Sergiño Dest who gets caught napping by his old Ajax teammate Daley Blind on the play. After the runs Dest just made on the other end you can see where he wasn't fully recovered. Blind caught him napping. Brutal blow to give it up just before halftime HALFTIME, Dutch 2-0

  49. Subscribe to GrantWahl.com @GrantWahl

NETHERLANDS GOAL. Dagger right before halftime. Similar look to the 1st. Blind runs into space in the box uncovered, has a free shot. 2-0.

  50. A Breakdown...

    Sam Tighe @stighefootball

#NED have little interest in possession and refuse to chase/press high up for it. This is a big problem for #USA. #NED have slowed game down and clogged the middle to nullify Musah/Weston + block access to FWD line. De Jong's just mopping up any hopeful attempts #FIFAWorldCup

  51. Will Parchman @WillParchman

LvG is plucking the strings of this match masterfully, unsurprisingly. It’s on Berhalter to graduate from checkers to chess.

  52. Taylor Twellman @TaylorTwellman

Remarkable tactic from LVG to allow the @USMNT to "have possession" because they aren't comfortable in that role....they don't like being the protagonist.

  53. Ouch

    James Nalton @JDNalton

Harsh commentary on the BBC: "Walker Zimmerman who is appropriately named, certainly in the first 38 minutes of this game."

  54. James Benge @jamesbenge

USMNT just look so twitchy on the ball and in the way they're moving. Very active, both mentally and physically, and the Dutch seem utterly content to let them tire themselves out. Worth noting here Adams has played 270 minutes, Musah 253. McKennie came in after injury issues.

  55. Paul Tenorio @PaulTenorio

It is *very* quiet here at Khalifa Stadium. Just such a completely different atmosphere than U.S.-Iran.

  56. Miguel Delaney @MiguelDelaney

The US are basically two thirds a very good side.

  57. Taylor Twellman @TaylorTwellman

It's been a really tough 1st 15 minutes for the midfield...chasing shadows a bit, bad giveaways, overwhelmed tactically a bit. #USMNT

  58. Henry Winter @henrywinter

Dumfries twinned with Memphis. Lot of love for #NED Depay's delayed run, perfect finish. Also Dumfries superb to create pull-back opportunity, feinting to move inside before ball arrived, tricking #USMNT l-b Robinson, turning out, taking the ball in space and crossing for Memphis

  59. Will Parchman @WillParchman

Pulisic doesn’t open up his foot. Memphis does. That’s the difference between 1-0 either way.

  60. Jeff Rueter @jeffrueter

First time the #USA has trailed in this World Cup. They've been lively in the opening 10 minutes and have had a couple of great chances. Bracing for the response.

  61. Paul Tenorio @PaulTenorio

That was very good from #NED. Worked through the right side, ball cut to the top of the box, Memphis there to finish uncontested. 1-0 Netherlands.
