UFC on Fox 23: Live Results, Play-by-Play and Fight Card Highlights
UFC on Fox 23 started a bit slow, but the ending was everything fans could have hoped to get. In the main event, Valentina Shevchenko not only beat Julianna Pena but she submitted her. A result almost no one predicted coming in After the fight, champion Amanda Nunes came into the Octagon and the two exchanged words. A rematch of their early 2016 is a virtual lock. In the co-main event, Donald Cerrone was unable to keep his hot streak going against Jorge Masvidal. Masvidal arguably finished Cerrone at the end of the first, but they allowed the fight to continue. He marched right out and finished his business in the opening minute of the second round. Round 2 Pena clinches again. Pena landing short knees again. She is happy to grind in this position. Pena tries to take her down, but Shevchenko defends.
Pena scores the takedown! She tries to posture up, but the punches come down just short. Shevchenko moving her legs up. Pena unable to generate much offense thus far, but it's solidly her round at this point. Less than a minute left.

Round 1 Pena slowly pressing forward and closes the distance. Pena landing solid knees from the outside position. Shevchenko times a knee and sweeps Pena to the mat.
Pena gets up and keeps pressing Shevchenko into the cage. They exchange knees. Pena is able to throw many more knees from outside. Pena gets tripped again. Good hammerfists from Shevchenko. Pena gets to full guard. Shevchenko not scoring much, but she is maintaining top control.

A big knock on Jorge Masvidal has been his tendency to get complacent in fights and not continue to throw. His output would drop and he would lose fights as a result. Against Donald Cerrone this was not an issue. He took it to Cerrone and cleaned his clock. Huge performance.

Round 2 The replay seemingly showed Cerrone was out. It's likely this fight should have been called.
Masvidal sensing the finish. Masvidal is going right after Cerrone. He is just touching Cerrone up right now. He knocks Cerrone down again! After another combination the referee stops it!
Donald Cerrone vs. Jorge Masvidal
Round 1 Nice body kick from Cowboy. Masvidal responds with one of his own. Cerrone looks to have a decided speed advantage. Cerrone mixing it up well. Good exchange for both men!
Masvidal goes to the outside of the lead leg. Good jab from Cerrone. Masvidal goes to the body. Big kick to the body from Cowboy. Both men are being very successful on the feet. Cerrone has a bit more output and power at this point.
Cerrone changes levels for a takedown, but he doesn't complete it. Spinning backfist lands for Masvidal. Masvidal just misses the overhand right landing flush. Cerrone circled away just in time. Cerrone has chewed up the lead leg of Masvidal. Good kick-punch combinations from Masvidal.
Masvidal drops Cerrone and finishes the round in a flurry! Saved by the bell.

Round 2 Knight catches a body kick, but Caceres pulls it out before he can be taken down. They get in a brief scramble, and Knight is able to assume top position.
Knight gets his back quickly. Still three minutes remaining. Nice elbow from Knight. He goes for the rear-naked choke, but it's on the chin. Caceres eats another punch from Knight. Knight is dominating the fight from this position. Knight goes for the rear-naked again, and Caceres taps this time!

Round 1 Caceres knocks Knight a bit off-balance with an inside leg kick. Knight looking for a takedown, but Caceres defends. Nice left from Caceres. These two are throwing quite a bit, but not landing clean. It's still offering more action than the previous two fights combined.
Nice exchange where Caceres gets the better of the exchange. Less than 90 seconds on the clock.
Nice output from Caceres. Knight struggling with the movement of Caceres now, but he's not getting clipped by anything big. Counter from Knight sits Caceres down. And a massive takedown from Knight as the round comes to a close. Huge swing in momentum at the end of the round.

Alvey escapes and gets up. Alvey clinches with Marquardt after failed striking. They break and go back to a distance with one minute remaining. They both land a shot or two before the bell. Atrocious fight.

Round 2 Alvey lands a left early in the second. Marquardt puts together a combination and only a right hand gets through. Alvey comes forward in a rush. Not much lands but it provides some action. Marquardt responds and they clinch on the fence.
Alvey catches Marquardt and briefly puts him on his butt. Alvey getting a bit more loose after that, but he's still waiting. Marquardt is starting to show signs of damage. Alvey lands a couple punches cleanly. Marquardt not offering much resistence now.

Round 1 Alvey throws a strong outside leg kick to start things off. Marquardt closes the distance and clinches with Alvey. They aren't doing much from the clinch. Grueling battle for position.

Less than a minute and still waiting on something to happen. Alvey hears the 10-second warning and then comes forward with a flying knee. That was needed much earlier.

Assuncao scores with a left. Sterling calls for the fans, but I'm not sure why. He's not done much to warrant their appreciation. Straight left lands for Assuncao. Sterling landing more, but without much power. He's just touching Assuncao.
This was not a good fight.

Round 2 Sterling takes another one low, but the referee didn't see it so the action continues. Assuncao lands another inside leg kick. The crowd is growing restless. Assuncao puts Sterling to a knee with a counter-right.
Assuncao stuffs a takedown attempt from Sterling. Low output. Not exciting.

Sterling eats a kick right to the family jewels. He'll take a breather.
Sterling doesn't even take 30 seconds. Assuncao lands a right hand. Sterling goes back to the leg kicks. He's struggling to find success elsewhere. Assuncao lands a low outside leg kick. That round did not have the action many had hoped for between these two skilled bantamweights.

Round 2 Nash hurts him again. Jingliang is getting wild. Nash catches him again, but Jingliang stays upright!
Jingliang lands a right on the counter. Nash goes back to his wrestling. Jingliang is defending the takedown, but he's not scoring any points with his back against the fence. The fight has stalled in this position.
They finally break. Jingliang goes back to the leg kick. Jingliang tries a takedown, but Nash defends. Jingliang lands flush on Nash and he's rocked! Jingliang finishes with a couple more follow up shots that put him out like a light.

Round 1 Nice outside leg kick from Jingliang. Nash darts forward, Jingliang circles out and lands another outside leg kick. Nash darts forward again and Jingliang responds with a clean right hand.
Nash lands a leg kick of his own. Nash starting to find his range with his hands. Jingliang stuns Nash who immediately goes for a takedown. Jingliang defends. Another overhand right connects for Jingliang. Jingliang's leg kicks are taking a toll.
Jingliang connects and Nash drops him with a counter shot! He's going for a rear-naked choke. Jingliang is fighting the hands to prevent him from finishing. Nash abandons the choke. A strong finish to the round for Nash. Did he steal it?

Round 2 Johnson scores another easy takedown right away in the second. Johnson is taking his time and keeping Da Silva pinned to the mat. Johnson is just controlling Da Silva. Half the round has passed.
Johnson lays in punches when given the chance. With just over a minute left in the round, Da Silva finally stands. With more damage this would be a clear 10-8 round. Da Silva looks absolutely drained.

Round 3 A much slower pace to start the third. Big deep breaths from both men. Shelton is only finding single shots on the feet. Shelton defends a takedown attempt from Pantoja. It was more of a sweep attempt.
Pantoja calls Shelton forward and he responds. Pantoja is being competitive on the feet although he's not likely winning the fight here. The statistics show Pantoja is landing more, and Brian Stann disagrees on the broadcast. Another good right from Pantoja finds its mark. Close round to close it out.

Round 2 Pantoja lands another kick to the body on the outset of the second. Shelton looking for another takedown, but Pantoja defends well. Pantoja landed a few good body shots as Shelton failed at the takedown.
Pantoja tries for a takedown, but it's defended. Pantoja goes for a guillotine, but Shelton is out easily and now he's on top. Shelton stands again. Pantoja goes for the guillotine again, but Shelton is out and on top again. Shelton allows Pantoja to stand. Pantoja sprawls on another Shelton takedown attempt.
Pantoja takes Shelton down against the cage. He takes his back with just over a minute left. Shelton cannot shake him off and Pantoja is all over him. Pantoja cannot lock up the rear-naked choke. Shelton defends the submission.

Round 1 Cottrell lands a good combination on the feet in the opening minute. Gonzalez responds with a kick to the body. Gonzalez gets very aggressive by chasing Cottrell down, and Cottrell uses the aggression against him with a takedown.
Cottrell is in side control. Gonzalez's active game from the bottom is keeping Cottrell from being offensive. Cottrell is able to keep top position. Cottrell tries for a mounted triangle, and Gonzalez is able to escape up.
