Sergio Pettis Survives Early Scare to Out-Point Brandon Moreno at UFC Fight Night 114 in Mexico City

The UFC returned to Mexico City with UFC Fight Night 114. Headlining the event was flyweights Sergio Pettis and Brandon Moreno. Pettis scored the unanimous decision victory after surviving a tight first round. In the co-main event, top strawweight prospect Alexa Grasso edged Randa Markos to get back in the win column after falling in her last outing.     Pettis lands a quick jab out of the chute in the fifth. Moreno comes forward quickly and gets a takedown. He ran through that attempt. Four minutes to work. Pettis has his tied up. Upkicks from Pettis lands.

    Pettis begins using the cage, but Moreno gets to his back. Pettis shucks him off. Back to the center at a striking distance. One minute left. Pettis lands a right. They mix it up on the feet until the horn sounds. A very close round to score.

    Pettis is on the march. Moreno suffers an eye poke and they'll break to check it out. They are looking at the eye that has the cut even though it was not the eye that was poked. Back to action and back to Pettis controlling this fight at range.

    Jumping knee from Pettis finds a home. Moreno is tough. Moreno's offense has basically been nullified. Moreno lands a counter right. Moreno has altered his stance and has found some growing success with it, but mostly when Pettis forces the issue. Pettis gets taken down off a cartwheel kick at the end of the round.

    Moreno lands a left, but Pettis responds immediately. Another kick lands for Pettis. Pettis catches a kick but doesn't follow Moreno down again. Pettis is comfortable with this fight on the feet. Nice right hand from Pettis. Pettis clips Moreno causing him to lose his mouthpiece.

    Clean right off a caught leg kick for Pettis. He lands again and Moreno may be on borrowed time. Pettis looking sharp and starting to pull away from Moreno who is looking very one-dimensional in this matchup. Pettis picking his shots at this point. Less than a minute in the round. Pettis lands another kick and more combinations that cut Moreno before the horn.

    Push kick puts Moreno off-balance. Moreno gets a bit wild but was in no danger of being countered. Pettis lands a body kick. Pettis catches a body kick, but he does not follow Moreno to the mat. Pettis grazes Moreno with a high kick and then lands another, but Moreno takes him down off the second high kick.

    Pettis attempts a triangle, but Moreno slips out. It does allow Pettis room to get back to his feet. Another grazing high kick for Pettis. Much less output in the second, but they are trying to get each other to make a mistake. Lots of feints and movement.

    Pettis continues to try and defend while trying to break the body triangle. Moreno has the arm on the chin. Pettis could have suffered a 10-8 round here.

    Markos just misses catching another kick, but she swarms on Grasso while landing multiple punches. Grasso has a more measured approach in the early stages of the third. Markos takes a shot and it works as she completes the takedown.

    Markos working from the guard. She scores some, but Grasso pushes off and gets up. Two minutes remaining. Markos is winning the round, but Grasso has time to steal it back. Grasso lands a right on the break from a short-lived clinch. One minute to go. Grasso pumps out her jab. Good entry, Grasso jumps a guillotine and lands a combination as she jumps off.

    Grass scores with a right hand. And another. Big scoring as the fight ends for Grasso that may have been enough to win the fight. Incredibly close.

    Grasso touches Markos with a high kick. Markos tries to get a takedown, but Grasso was able to end up on top in a scramble. Markos is right back up before she can control the position. Markos briefly trips Grasso to her butt. Grasso is back up.

    Markos is sucking wind, but she catches a leg kick and takes Grasso down. Right in the center of the cage. Markos works from half-guard. Grasso works up. Markos takes Grasso down again off a kick. Grasso sweeps, but Markos works to regain top position. She is in mount. Excellent grappling from Markos.

    Grasso gets back to half-guard. She concedes the round, but she gets out of danger at the end of the round.

    Markos lands the first significant strike of the bout. They exchange in the center of the cage, but neither woman lands clean. Grasso testing her range with her strikes. Markos landing clean in the next exchange. Several shots on the mark. Quick jab from Markos.

    Grasso lands a right over the top. Grasso goes to the body with a kick. Grasso pops Markos with a jab. Now Grasso is landing clean as she finds her range and timing. They are getting after it in the first. The two clinch against the cage. Markos has a small cut near her left eye. Markos fails to throw Grasso and gets her back taken.

    Grasso landing ground and pound. Markos fights to her feet. High-paced action. Grasso took over in the second-half of the round to take it.

    Half the round has passed. Evans likely needs a finish, but the first round was tight. He is giving this fight away with his minimal output. Evans lands the best strike of the night with a big right, but Alvey took it. Alvey defends another takedown attempt and lands knees to the body.

    Alvey starting to pressure Evans now. Nice body kick from Evans. Alvey responds with a right that touches Evans. Alvey lands another right. Evans is still not throwing much which has almost become a trademark in recent fights.

    Evans gets a good takedown, but Alvey gets right back up. Alvey gets a couple punches to land in the clinch as Evans looks for the takedown again. Alvey exits after a couple knees land.

    Almost nothing happened in the first minute before Evans shot in and moved Alvey to the cage. Alvey scored with a knee as Evans attempted to continue the takedown attempt. Nice elbow over the top from Alvey. Evans finally gets his hands clasped and takes Alvey down.

    Alvey works back up without taking damage. Now they separate. Output is low as expected. Close round with the little that happened.

    Perez still trying to get inside range, but Soukhamthath isn't giving him too many other options. Right hand lands for Soukhamthath. Perez just misses on a winging right overhand. Soukhamthath dodges Perez and scores with a right of his own.

    Perez drives forward and pushes Soukhamthath to the fence. He gets the takedown and lands a knee t the body. Two minutes remain. Soukhamthath stands. Soukhamthath is breathing heavy. Soukhamthath lands a left and misses with a huge right. Soukhamthath has been much wilder in the third and it may have cost him.

    29-28 on our card, but rounds two and three were incredibly close. It could easily be 30-27 Soukhamthath.

    Perez just missing landing clean again. He's less than a half-inch off from really connecting. Soukhamthath should be credited for his distance management. Soukhamthath drops Perez again with his jab. Soukhamthath digs to the body and now Soukhamthath is getting comfortable.

    Perez is starting to wear the damage. Soukhamthath gets dropped by a Perez overhand right, and Perez is now on top. Soukhamthath is tying him up. Soukhamthath uses the cage to stand up. Spinning back elbow from Perez! Soukhamthath lands a left.

    A close round.

    Straight left sits Perez down, but Soukhamthath doesn't jump on him. Perez landing outside leg kicks. Perez getting closer to landing his punches clean. Soukhamthath has slowed his output since dropping Perez. Another straight left puts Perez on his butt.

    Soukhamthath defends a takedown attempt. Perez may have had a claim to that round if not for those two knockdowns.
