Robert Whittaker Overcomes a Leg Injury to Best Yoel Romero for the Interim UFC Middleweight Championship at UFC 213

UFC 213 crowned a new interim UFC champion. This time in the middleweight division. Robert Whittaker, or Bobby Knuckles, overcame an injured leg to edge out Yoel Romero by unanimous decision. This sets up a potential meeting with Michael Bisping to unify the middleweight championship. In the co-main event, Alistair Overeem squeaked by Fabricio Werdum to put himself back in the hunt for the UFC heavyweight crown. Miss anything?     Both men come out swinging in the fifth! They want this, but both men are so tired.

    Whittaker gets the better of the early exchanges, but Romero gets in a couple clean shots of his own. Romero slips to the mat late in the final round. Whittaker busts Romero open with a knee.

    Romero tries to get up, but Whittaker moves to half-guard. Big elbows from top! Less than 20 seconds. This appears to be Whittaker's fight, but we go to the scorecards!

    Whittaker lands a kick that knocks Romero a bit off balance. Romero goes for a takedown and Whittaker scrambles. He gets to the fence with Romero on his back. Whittaker lands a knee on the exit. Another defended takedown for Whittaker.

    Romero throws a jumping knee that doesn't land clean. Nice left from Whittaker that followed a kick. Front kick to the body now. Nice scoring for Whittaker. Narrowly misses a left uppercut that came all the way from Australia. He packed that deep in his suitcase. Romero misses another takedown. Romero is not offering much on the feet. Now Bobby Knuckles is touching him. Romero is tired.

    Romero runs a double that fails. Whittaker mixing things up. This appears to be his fight to lose now.

    Hard push kick from Whittaker. Romero is almost taking this round off. Whittaker sprawls hard avoid a Romero shot. Romero just avoids a hard left from Whittaker. Romero is letting Whittaker get a rhythm. Whittaker comes forward as Romero circles away. Romero conceded the round. Bisping mocks him and rips up the Cuban flag.

    High kick blocked by Romero. Flying knee from Romero lands to the midsection as Whittaker came forward. Romero with a clean takedown. Whittaker is flat on his back in the center of the cage. Whittaker is holding on while Romero lands short strikes. Romero takes Whittaker's back, but Whittaker stands. Whittaker spins into Romero.

    Trip from Romero, but Whittaker is back up. John McCarthy separates them off the cage. Whittaker tries a combination, but Romero is able to avoid the damage. They clinch again. Romero with a late takedown.

    Romero with a big takedown and spins to the back, but Whittaker works up and gets free. Flying knee into a takedown attempt from Romero, but Whittaker stays upright. They're up against the fence. Whittaker is free again. This is tense.

    More outstanding takedown defense from Whittaker. And he lands a knee to the body on the break. Inside leg kick from Romero. Whittaker nearly misses a head kick landing flush. Tough, tough round to score.

    Werdum starts to throw more, but nothing lands. A lot of errant strikes in the opening minute. Nice 1-2 from Werdum and then a knee rocks Overeem! Werdum slips and ends up on his back, but Overeem lets him up. They're mixing it up now! Werdum is touching him up. Werdum with a takedown! He gets to work from top with half the round left.

    Werdum peppers Overeem's body with punches. Short hammerfists come from Werdum as Overeem attempts to tie him up. The first round scoring will decide this fight as Werdum is not going for the finish. He's riding it out.

    Overeem is up and out again. Left again from Overeem followed by a kick to the body. Excellent stuff from Overeem in the second. Werdum lands a right. Nice jab from Werdum. Werdum isn't doing enough to take the round, but Overeem is letting him back into it. Another sweeping left from Overeem.

    Werdum slips, but Overeem is not interested in going to the ground. Counter right catches Werdum. Werdum has deceptive reach. Werdum gets stuffed on a shot from way outside. Overeem just misses with the right.

    Blaydes looks for a takedown again, but once again Omielańczuk defends. Another takedown defended. Omielańczuk's output has almost stopped which won't help him with the judges. Another unintentional low blow. Blaydes takes another telegraphed shot which is easily defended.

    Miller landed several hard low inside leg kicks and Pettis was looking for the perfect shot. A big body kick opened the offense up for Pettis who then started to open up with creativity. Pettis took the round with his diversity in the second half of the round.

    Miller was rocked once, but he survived. He looks slower than at the start of the fight.

    Font comes right out with jabs. Font is getting the best of the action. He's just out of the way when Silva de Andrade throws, and doing well enough to score. He's only missing landing clean on the power shots. Font lands a left straight. Font's combination game is fantastic.

Browne grabs the Thai clinch again while Oleinik hammers away at his body. Oleinik is wearing Browne down. Big slam from Browne, but Oleinik almost took top position. Browne stays on top.

    Browne not doing much from top. Oleinik is up and drags Browne down. He's on Browne's back throwing big punches. Oleinik now looking for the choke with over 90 seconds remaining. He gets Browne to tap to the choke! Wow!

Browne is throwing kick after kick trying to keep Oleinik away, but he charges forward. They clinch. Browne gets out of danger, and get the Thai clinch. They break and Browne rocks him with a big punch. Oleinik survives the initial onslaught and they go back to the feet.

    Oleinik drops Browne! He gets back up quickly. Oleinik works the body from the clinch. Oleinik lands again once he has space and then attacks the body. Oleinik catches a kick and takes Browne down. Oleinik moves to side control. Browne gives up his back. Oleinik peppers him with strikes. Browne survives.
