Trades That Could Jump-Start the Los Angeles Clippers

Josh ToyofukuDec 27, 2011

The Los Angeles Clippers (1-0) need more help than most people might think.

After having years of patience, they have built up a potentially great starting lineup with Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups, Caron Butler, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. This lineup has some people talking about a deep playoff run coming for the Clippers.

Behind that starting five are guards, guards and more guards. Mo Williams, Randy Foye and Eric Bledsoe give the Clippers five potential point guards on the roster. They have a lot of depth there but that leaves them very thin in the frontcourt.

Despite recently signing power forward Reggie Evans to bring toughness and rebounding to the Clipper bench, they need more size down low in order for them to be a great team.

Who could the Clippers possibly trade with to make their hopes brighter? Read on to find out.

Mo Williams to Indiana

The Indiana Pacers have done a nice job building a potential playoff team without taking on any bad contracts. But right now, that's all they are—a potential playoff team.

A lot of times, it's better to be a team headed for a high lottery pick than a fringe playoff team because you are lined up to get a top pick rather than being in a position to stay stagnant. In order for the Pacers to get out of the middle group and move towards becoming a force in the East, they need a better point guard.

That's where Mo Williams and the Clippers step in.

The Clippers can offer Mo Williams and their $3.8 million trade exception for Tyler Hansbrough and fulfill their own need by adding the big forward. The Pacers will get a good point guard who can feed the ball to power forward David West and small forward Danny Granger.

Eric Bledsoe to the Lakers

This trade might be hard for Clipper fans to swallow because Eric Bledsoe has so much potential and he would be heading to their rivals down the hallway, the Lakers.

But at the end of the day, it makes sense for both teams.

The Clippers obviously need size and frontcourt depth and if they could get Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter, it would be a huge boost to the Clipper bench. Both of them are both 6'9" and bring size and rebounding ability.

The Lakers are in huge need of a point guard and Bledsoe has tremendous upside and could be a solid player for years to come. I'm sure Laker fans weren't happy seeing Derek Fisher get blocked from behind by Tyreke Evans and would be more than happy to have Bledsoe.

Mo Williams to Milwaukee

Milwaukee Bucks' point guard Brandon Jennings hasn't made the leap to greatness many people have been waiting for after his stellar rookie season. They also have an overpaid backup big man who is making over $6 million each of the next four years, Drew Gooden.

Just in case Brandon Jennings never lives up to the hype or potential, it wouldn't hurt for Milwaukee to snag a point guard who is established and knows the city—Mo Williams. In return, the Bucks could send Gooden back to the Clippers where he could fit right in behind Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan in the low post.

Gooden would also bring a veteran presence to the Clipper frontcourt.

Mo Williams to New Orleans

4 of 4

The Clippers have already made a deal with the New Orleans Hornets once this season, so why not make another?

After trading All-Star point guard Chris Paul to the Clippers, the Hornets are left with Jarrett Jack as their starter, a fairly significant drop off. But Mo Williams would be a great addition to the team; in a starting role, he could average 15 points and five assists per game.

For Mo Williams, the Hornets could send small forward Trevor Ariza to the Clippers. Ariza is one of the more underrated defenders in the game and he could provide depth behind Caron Butler at the small forward position. He is also versatile and could play power forward if the Clippers decide to go small and put Blake Griffin at center.
