Obnoxious Fans + Overhyped + Overcockiness = SEC

Kevin TrahanJan 1, 2009

Now I know I am going to catch a lot of crap for this article, but it has to be done. The SEC may be the most over-hyped conference ever in college football. Maybe it's the constant media bias or maybe it's the obnoxious fans, but something has to change. Now I admit, the SEC is good, but they aren't the Gods that the media and they themselves portray them to be.

The first problem with the SEC is the over-cockiness and overconfidence that they have towards themselves. We have seen this happen more and more as the season progresses. The main thing that the SEC likes to brag about is bowl success. While they have won the last two National Championship games, and I applaud them for that, they exaggerate the amount of success they have had.

One of the conferences that SEC fans pick on in particular is the Big 10. While they have beaten Ohio State in two straight National Championships, that is one team, not a whole conference. Also, overall, the Big 10 has done better against the SEC if you include all bowl games. Since 2004, the Big 10 is 6-5 against the SEC in bowl games.

Now the SEC would argue that this is against bad teams, but this isn't true. Wins came against Florida, LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee (back when they were good). Since 2002, there has only been one year in which the SEC got more wins against the Big Ten. Also, the Big Ten has more national championships with 27 than the SEC with 25.

This year, the trend has continued. The SEC is still claiming it's the best, while the Pac-10 is winning the Bowl Challenge Cup. Actually, the SEC has never won a Bowl Challenge Cup while the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, Mountain West, Pac-10, and Big East all have. And now, they've moved onto bragging about how they will win their third straight National Championship, but not if the Sooners have anything to say about it.

What the SEC fans and media don't want you to know, is Oklahoma is pretty darn good. They boast the best offense in the country and while Florida does have a good defense, the Sooners are unstoppable.

Unlike the media who don't give the Sooners a shot, I think that they should be the favorites to win this game. And Oklahoma finally has the chance to something that has been a long time coming: put an end to SEC cockiness.

So Sooners, from the Big 10, Big 12, Pac-10, Big East, ACC, Mountain West, MAC, WAC, and Conference USA, good luck. We're counting on you.
