NFL's Stock Up Stock Down Week 17: Whose Value Is Plummeting After Week 16?
Santa wasn't good to everyone in the NFL this past weekend. The games over a four-day span provided the fans with plenty of fodder to talk about and writers to pass judgment on.
There is one week left in the regular NFL season and the playoffs are finally taking shape. The right to draft Andrew Luck is still undecided. And if we are betting, the odds on about five or six head coaches retaining their jobs is still up in the air.
You have to love the NFL right about now, which is as unpredictable as the winter weather. And while the seasons change, there are coaches, teams and players whose stock continues to plummet for one reason or another.
Here are some players, coaches and teams whose stock has gone down this week.
St. Louis Rams
1 of 14Would having the first pick in the 2012 Draft be a good or bad thing for the Rams?
They already have a strong running game with Steven Jackson and their franchise passer in Sam Bradford. But would having Andrew Luck be a good thing for them?
St. Louis can't seem to get out of its way this season. They are 2-13 on the year.
Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
2 of 14Another one of those situations where the Cowboys must win to make the playoffs.
They play the Giants this weekend with both teams sitting at 8-7 this year. Whoever wins the game will win the division.
Tony Romo has a hurt throwing hand, which may be a hindrance in his performance against the Giants pass rush.
His injury may be the most talked about hand all year this week.
Miami Dolphins
3 of 14First the first time, the Dolphins have a 1,000-yard rusher and receiver in the same season. Matt Moore has played admirably and the defense had stepped up over the past six weeks.
Until this past Saturday against the New England Patriots. After being up 17-0, the Dolphins let the Patriots back in the ballgame, which Miami eventually lost 27-24.
The win gave the Patriots a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Dirk Koetter, Jacksonville Jaguars
4 of 14Koetter should have breathed a sigh of relief when Jack Del Rio was fired as head coach of the Jaguars. Koetter and his offensive staff have done little to improve the condition of the team.
Forget the 41-14 win over Tampa Bay. The team still has a problem scoring points.
Blaine Gabbert needs some serious offseason help and the team needs dependable receivers.
It is going to be a long offseason.
Romeo Crennel, Kansas City Chiefs
5 of 14Crennel was the talk of the NFL last week.
After being named interim coach following the firing of Todd Haley, Crennel did the unthinkable in beating the Green Bay Packers.
This past weekend, Crennel and his Chiefs lost in overtime to the Raiders and in doing so, will no longer be a contender to reach the playoffs.
Had the Chiefs won, Kansas City would have met Denver for the AFC West crown and the game everyone wants to see: Tim Tebow vs. Kyle Orton.
Houston Texans
6 of 14The AFC South champions looked like anything but a playoff team when they let Reggie Wayne catch a pass from Dan Orlovsky with 19 seconds remaining in the game.
The catch in the end zone gave Indianapolis a 19-16 win, their second in as many games.
If the Texans are going to move deep into the playoffs, they will need to prevent situations like this from happening in the first place.
Raheem Morris, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
7 of 14Can we just put this man out of his misery?
Morris and the Buccaneers are just spiraling out of control and the defense is leaking like the Titanic in the ocean.
The Bucs have talent, but seem to have lost their way. And Morris seems to be just as unaware as the team he leads.
Cleveland Browns
8 of 14The Browns lost 20-14 to the Ravens Saturday.
The loss can be blamed on bad management of the offense and penalties that killed any momentum the team may have had to overcome the AFC North leaders.
Seneca Wallace, who was replacing Colt McCoy, completed 19 of 33 passes on the day.
Mark Sanchez, New York Jets
9 of 14The New York Jets quarterback will not be in the AFC Championship game for the third straight season.
The Jets fell 29-14 to the cross-town rival Giants on Saturday.
While he threw for 258 yards in the loss, Sanchez and the Jets will need to beat Miami on Sunday and have some help along the way.
Washington Redskins Defense
10 of 14The defensive unit for the Redskins took out star running back Adrian Peterson and starting rookie quarterback, Christian Ponder.
Still, the team gave up 33 points in a 33-26 loss.
For a team that has two good pass rushers in Brian Orapko and Ryan Kerrigan and a decent linebacking corps, they could not stop fill-ins Toby Gerhart and Joe Webb, who threw for two scores.
Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos
11 of 14Does this mean the Broncos fans are now cheering for Brady Quinn?
The Denver quarterback got a vote of confidence from John Elway and then threw four interceptions in a 40-14 loss to Buffalo.
Denver has now lost two in a row and has to win Sunday against Kansas City to make the playoffs.
The Broncos can only get in to the postseason if they win the division.
Early Doucet, Arizona Cardinals
12 of 14It is one of those plays that becomes surreal.
Doucet was wide open and tripped over his own feet as a pass was being thrown to him in the end zone. He fell and the pass was not completed, which would have given the Cardinals a probable win over the Bengals.
Instead of being the hero in the game, Doucet was the goat.
Christian Ponder, Minnesota Vikings
13 of 14I know it is wrong to pick on a man when he is down, but could Joe Webb be a better option next week in the Vikings season finale?
Webb completed 4 of 5 passes for 84 yards and two scores.
He is instant offense for the Vikings. While Ponder is learning on the job, Ponder helped the Vikings to the win Saturday.
Philadelphia Eagles
14 of 14I put them on this list because so much was made of their offseason spending and how this was the "Dream Team" that would challenge for the Super Bowl.
Even with the 20-7 win in Dallas this weekend, the team will not make the playoffs.
The Eagles have been an up-and-down team all season and needs to find a rhythm so next season they can contend for a championship.
