Bill Cowher: Sorry Jets, I Will Not Coach Brett Favre

Sean CroweJan 1, 2009

If you want me, you need to ensure me that Brett Favre will not be my starting quarterback next season. I will not coach a team that has Brett Favre as it’s starting quarterback.

That is what Bill Cowher told the New York Jets. The Jets told Cowher that they couldn’t guarantee Favre wouldn’t be back, so Cowher told the Jets to take a hike.

How do Jets fans like the Favre trade now?

Not only did he cost them a shot at the playoffs with his insanely poor play in December, but now he cost them a chance at landing the number one coaching candidate on the market.

To all the Favre worshippers who will no doubt tell me how wrong I am in the comments section, you have officially been rebuffed by a Super Bowl winning head coach.

Brett Favre saved the Jets. Brett Favre turned a 4 win team into a 9 win team. The Jets were garbage before Favre. His legacy lives on!

It’s hogwash. Complete balderdash.

Two years ago, the Jets won 10 games and made the playoffs. Last off-season, they went on a Yankee-like shopping spree prior to the Favre trade.

The Jets were, at least, an 8 or 9 win team before Favre got there. Based on the season they had, they were probably a 10 or 11 win team without Favre.

Brett Favre dragged the Jets down. He cost Mangini the only head coaching job he’ll ever see in the NFL (OK, so he did one good thing).

Enough with the Favre worship. Enough catering to this self-centered super star. It’s time for Favre to retire. Give people like me, who are admittedly stuck on his recent history, time to forget about the Favre from this decade and remember the one from the last decade.

You know, the hall of famer. The gunslinger who helped his team more than he hurt it. The guy who won a Super Bowl. The guy who was a legit NFL MVP candidate every season.

Not the guy I saw this season. Or even the guy I saw last season. Not the guy who cries in post game interviews and does his best to make every off-season about himself. Not the guy who pissed off the Packers and forced them to send him packing. Not the Brett Favre who wore the wrong green uniform this season.

Brett, please retire. The only time I want to see Brett Favre playing football is in NFL Films videos when they’re discussing the best quarterbacks of the 90s.

Let’s just pretend the last decade never happened…
