The South Carolina Gamecocks and Iowa Hawkeyes are set to play in the 23rd annual Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., on Jan. 1, 2009.

Head coach Steve Spurrier has finally taken his team to a New Year’s Day bowl game. The Gamecocks did not make a bowl appearance last year, and they were beaten by Texas and Florida the two previous post-seasons.

Iowa lost its first eight bowl matchups before winning four of their past five. The Hawkeyes did not get a bowl invite last year. This game marks the first-ever meeting between Iowa and South Carolina.
