2012 NFL Free Agency: Odds on Where Colts WR Reggie Wayne Will Land
In an article by Michael David Smith of NBC Sports, it appears that Reggie Wayne may not be a Colt much longer:
""Asked by a reporter whether Thursday night against the Texans will be his last home game with the Colts, Wayne said that’s entirely possible."
"
That being said, although Wayne is 33 years old, he still can provide as a viable target to teams needing a WR. And even with the NFL Draft having some solid WR talent throughout, it's not a bad idea to bring the a savvy vet for a little while.
So, here are five teams with the odds of where Wayne will land.
Miami Dolphins
1 of 5It finally appears that RB Reggie Bush has developed into a complete NFL player, as he's done great work on the ground as of recent. On top of that, Miami could possibly have a decent franchise QB in Matt Moore.
The Dolphins have a stud WR in Brandon Marshall, as well as a very reliable TE in Anthony Fasano, so what's the motive to pursue Reggie Wayne? Well, Miami doesn't have a No. 2 receiver that Moore can really count on.
Davone Bess and Brian Hartline together are okay, but Wayne himself would improve the production so much more. Both he and Marshall would be excellent complements to one another and neither would ever get double-covered.
With his solid pass protection, Moore would have nice time to read and target either guy. In addition that makes the ground game more effective and before you know it, Miami has a complete offense that's quite dangerous.
Odds: 1 in 15
Denver Broncos
2 of 5Denver is certainly in the need of an established WR. Eddie Royal is a solid slot man and although Eric Decker and DeMaryius Thomas are reliable, they're still not on the level of Reggie Wayne.
Especially after moving on with Tim Tebow, but not Brandon Lloyd, part of Tebow's lack of production in the passing game is not having a threatening wide-out. Well, Wayne would be a great asset into the development of their younger WRs, as well as Tebow's.
Plus, the Broncos still need to improve more defensively, so expect them to draft there and maybe take a WR late. As for Wayne, he'll stretch the field enough to derive attention from Decker and Thomas.
Add in Royal going underneath, Tebow's ability to buy time and the Broncos solid rushing attack, Wayne can only help a team on the rise such as Denver.
Odds: 1 in 20
Chicago Bears
3 of 5The Chicago Bears are in dire straits after being mauled by injuries during the second half of this season. Currently riding a four-game losing streak and their playoff hopes slowly dying, a burst of hope will be needed to motivate this offseason.
That's where Reggie Wayne comes in, who would immediately become Chicago's best WR.
Roy Williams has underachieved throughout his career and Johnny Knox isn't a No. 1 WR. He's a better slot guy and with Wayne as the No. 1, they'll work well together.
In turn, that will allow Devin Hester to focus strictly on his return duties and take his game to another level as opposed to worrying about Mike Martz's offense. As for Martz, many receivers have succeeded in his system and a guy like Wayne would flourish.
Jay Cutler's arm is strong, RB Matt Forte would draw up attention, and Wayne would stretch the field to open up the playbook. As long as the Bears would be able to remain healthy throughout all of 2012, this a great fit.
Odds: 1 in 30
Seattle Seahawks
4 of 5Although the Seattle Seahawks are ranked No. 23 in passing offense, the potential is there and Reggie Wayne would take it to another level.
The main question in Seattle is whether Tarvaris Jackson is the answer for a franchise QB. We know Pete Carroll will make him better, but will it be good enough to contend for a Super Bowl?
The running game needs no fixing, as RB Marshawn Lynch eats defenses for a living. As for their receiving core, Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Sidney Rice, and Ben Obomanu do work well together. So in regard to Wayne, where would he fit in?
Well, here Wayne would just have to take on a different role. Baldwin is the most reliable and Tate is the speedster that can stretch the field. Wayne would battle with Rice for the No. 2 spot however, keeping Rice there and limiting Wayne to the slot would be best.
He provides another target for Jackson to hit, but if he becomes a slot guy, now the question evolves into the concern of Obomanu's development. So, with too many questions in The Great Northwest, although Wayne would definitely improve them, it's not the best of fits.
Odds: 1 in 80
Minnesota Vikings
5 of 5Minnesota desperately needs a well-established receiving target.
Rookie QB Christian Ponder has proven he can make the weapons around him better, but only to a certain degree being that he's just a rookie. Well, Reggie Wayne's experience would surely be of use.
The question here however, is how much the Vikings want to continue investing with Percy Harvin, Michael Jenkins, and TE Kyle Rudolph. In Denver for example, the Broncos lack a stud TE whereas Rudolph is that guy in Minnesota.
Harvin is a solid slot guy with the ability to take a jet-sweep, the concern is Michael Jenkins. Surely those two will help Jenkins produce in 2012 however, he's not nearly the weapon Reggie Wayne is.
That being said though, the Vikings also have arguably the NFL's best RB in Adrian Peterson. With one of the NFL's best rushing attacks and potential in the passing game, it would not be surprising if the Vikings passed on Wayne.
Odds: 1 in 100
