What NFL Award Made History By Going to a Player Two Times?

Joe Burgett Jan 1, 2009

Recently, many NFL awards have been coming out. And as you know many awards have been won by one player a few times. Like the MVP or even the Coach of the Year. But one award has gone to a different player every year of it's existence.

I am talking about the Comeback Player of the Year award. It went to Chad Pennington for the second time, making him the first player in NFL history to win it twice. He won it two years ago previously with the New York Jets.

This year, he won it with a different team, the Miami Dolphins, who arguably had the best turnaround in NFL History. They were so close to going without even one win last year.

But towards the end of the year they came out and beat the Baltimore Ravens. Ending up 1-15 and saving the embarrassment of being the first team to go 0-16. Of course, as we all know the Detroit Lions took the honor this season by going 0-16.

Of course the Dolphins looked to be getting better this season, after all things could only get better right? They brought in Bill Parcells to help run the company, and got a new head coach in Tony Soprano.

But of course the change at quarterback is one thing people were kind of skeptical of. They brought in Chad Pennington? I mean come on, right? How was this going to help them. They needed to draft a QB instead well...right?

And that was a resounding NO! Pennington came out and helped turn the Phins around to a 11-5 record. Personally, I couldn't believe it. I thought the guys who put it up forgot to carry the one.

It was so surprising to see. And Pennington was a big reason why. Now, he was not glamorous out there. He didn't have the receivers a Tom Brady did, he didn't throw 50 TDs.

He kept the ball safe, usually, handed it off when needed, and threw the ball to the open man. It was not a hard concept; he did what was needed when called upon. The QB many teams want to have, but cannot.

I relate him to the drummer in a band. He keeps the beat going. He may show some excitement, but he lets the running backs play guitar and lead sing. He doesn't want all the credit; he'd rather be in the background and let others go.

He just gets the ball to them and they do what they need to win. And he keeps them out there long enough to get the defense some rest. Many think he could be MVP, not me, but I think he should be in talks.

The Dolphins won their division and are in the playoffs. They're going against the Baltimore Ravens and look like they may win. I think it will be a team effort that it has been all year that will put them on top.

I think Pennington will do in this game as he has done all year. Lead his team, keep the beat going, and make sure others shine out there by getting the ball to them and them getting into the end zone.

NFL History has been made with Chad Pennington. More can be made if they win the Super Bowl. Worst team of the year to best team. It is a movie script waiting to happen.

What do you think about the Dolphins' chances and Chad Pennington's history making second Comeback Player of the Year award?
