Tit for Tat With an Oklahoma Sooners Fan

Daniel ThompsonDec 30, 2008

In a recent article by Brad Howard entitled "Why Oklahoma Will Overcome Underdog Status to Beat Florida for BCS Championship" I commented that I would play point/counterpoint with him regarding the BCS National Championship game.  He agreed and we each wrote five questions for the other person to answer. My answers follow his bold questions:

1.  Should Tim Tebow go ahead and play safety in the MNC to raise his draft stock?

That’s a funny question that I have never heard.  Tebow was a linebacker before being converted to quarterback.  However, I think at the safety position we should be just fine.  Ahmad Black has six interceptions and has been a huge surprise playing in a position that has lost Jamar Hornsby, Bryan Thomas, and Dorian Monroe.

Major Wright has also stepped up and is head hunting ever time the ball is snapped.  He has three interceptions and a touchdown this season.  Coming off the bench, Will Hill has two interceptions and 45 tackles.

To answer the question, Tebow should stick to quarterback and we will be just fine at safety.

2.   If Jeff Demps is really the fastest player in college football history why don't they just throw him the deep ball every snap and let him outrun the defense?

Yes, Jeff Demps did run a 10.01 100 meter dash.  However, that does not mean he can just run up the field as there are many factors.  One, the play has to run perfectly every time from blocking to the pass.  Secondly, while he may be the may be the fastest player on the field that does not mean he is 10 yards ahead of every player after 20 yards.

While he may have run a 10.01, most of these kids probably would run about 10.4-10.8.  However, I will take his 8.4 yards per carry and 9.4 yards per catch any day of the week.

3.  Why hasn't the University of Florida just replaced Percy Harvin's bum ankle with a Bionic one yet? They can rebuild him, they have the technology.

Great question.  Percy has had problems with his heel since high school and his ankle for almost all of college and it doesn’t ever seem to get better.  The most recent report is that he is “probable” for the MNC.

I know he will play, but for Percy to take six weeks to recover from an ankle injury that apparently wasn’t supposed to be “that” severe it seems like he has a nasty case of fragility.  I would love if they could bionically fix his ankle, heel and anything else that may be ailing.

4.   Is it true that under required items for freshman year at UF, cut off jeans are number six on the list?

No.

5.  Florida fans are notorious for being one of the rowdiest crowds in college football. If they had a battle royal for the Fandom crown who would they play?

It is tough to pick just one.  Texas A&M has the 12th man, Michigan has the largest stadium attendance, and well Houston averages only 2,546 people per game, but they still play with heart.  It is a tough question because so many different schools offer so many different things.

But I guess I would have to go with…LSU.  There is just something about Death Valley and their fans that really make them rowdy.  And no matter what anybody from LSU says "The Swamp" is still the loudest stadium in the college football.
