Bruins-Maple Leafs: Boston Escapes With One Point

Mark MarinoFeb 17, 2008

The Boston Bruins were victims to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, in overtime, 4-3 loss in. Although slipping to 2-4-1 in February, the black-and-gold left Toronto, adding another point to the standings, and back into 8th place in the East.

Maple Leafs forward Darcy Tucker was the Bruins killer tonight, a 3-point effort, and scoring his second goal of the game in OT for the Leafs win.

(Side note: I'm still perplexed KP, what should the Leafs do? )

A controversial delay of game penalty on Zdeno Chara, about five minutes into the third period, was all the Leafs and Darcy Tucker needed to bounce back in this game—taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power player to tie the game 2-2.

The ice seemed to have been titled, leaning into the Bruins zone, as Tucker's offensive momentum continued. Just under two-minutes later, Tucker set-up the go-ahead goal for Nik Antropov on a nifty pass from behind the net.

Chara came back and scored the game tying goal, with just under a minute to play to send it to overtime. But the puck stopped there for the B's.

Goalie Tim Thomas played decent, turning away 32 of 36 shots for the visiting Bruins.

This was a very important game for Boston with two points hanging in the balance for the very tight Eastern Conference standings, especially with the Flyers (64) 1-0 loss to Montreal (71) and the 5-1 Rangers (65) win over the Sabres (64).

However, the Bruins (64) did get muster one point and are the current in the 8th spot with just eight points separate the No. 5 and No.12 seed in the East.

Boston must continue to find a way to get points, especially within the Eastern Conference.

They have two days off before playing in Carolina on Tuesday night, against the conference rivals Carolina Hurricanes. The puck drops at 7pm EST, at the RBC Center.

P.S. The "Countdown to Marian Hossa" has officially begun for Boston. T-Minus nine days.
