NFL Extends Contract with TVs Big 3, Pushes for More Thursday Night Games

Richard LangfordDec 14, 2011

NFL football has a new television deal that offers up some changes to the current broadcasting conditions, but maintains the same networks.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello broke the news on his twitter account.

Changes in the new agreement allow for CBS to broadcast both AFC and NFC games. Previously, CBS had AFC contests and Fox had NFC games. The conference of the visiting team determined which network would own the rights to the game.

Will Brinson of CBS Sports offered this quote from Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports

"

CBS has been broadcasting the NFL for 52 years, and we are extremely pleased to extend our long-term partnership. This commitment is further proof of the valued relationship CBS shares with the NFL and of the overall strength of CBS Sports. The opportunity to add quality NFC games greatly enhances our television package. We look forward to continued growth as we broadcast the NFL for many more years to come.

"

NBC will also see an enhanced role in the new deal. They will now be broadcasting the evening game on Thanksgiving.

That will not be the only change to NFL football on Thursday nights.

Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith reported some details of the league's press release.

"

The agreements also enable the NFL to expand its Thursday night package of games on NFL Network beginning next year.

"

David Smith reported that the number of Thursday night games has not been announced, but that it is likely that most weeks will have one such game, with the exception being mentioned as those that would go head-to-head with the World Series.

All three networks will have the opportunity to air three Super Bowls during the course of the agreement.

This move will also see changes to playoff broadcasting. There is speculation that ESPN may have scored a wild-card game.

Financial terms of the agreements have not been released.
