NFL Playoff Predictions: Projecting the 4 Strongest Road Teams
Winning on the road in the NFL is never easy, and it's even harder when it comes to the playoffs. It benefits a team to work hard to earn road wins in the regular season and try to translate that into postseason success if and when they get there.
In the following slides, I detail four likely playoff teams that have performed well on the road this season and should continue to do so when January comes around.
The New York Giants
1 of 4In recent years, the New York Giants have had more trouble winning big games at home than they did on the road, and this year isn't any different. With three home wins and four road victories, they've proven they can leave the friendly confines of their home field and perform well.
This should help the Giants significantly in this playoffs this year, as there's little chance that they'll have the opportunity to host a game with both the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints in their conference.
Facing either of those powerhouse teams presents their own challenges, to be sure, but at least playing them on the road won't bother the Giants so much.
The New England Patriots
2 of 4The New England Patriots are well-prepared for every matchup they face, whether it be in the regular season or the playoffs, and thus should be fine if they have to play on the road this postseason.
While two of the Patriots' three losses have come on the road this year, they've won five games in opponents' stadiums, and it's not the location of the venue that has much affect on how well or poorly the team plays.
They've overcome that potential disadvantage by staying focused on the task at hand. If the Patriots have any trouble winning on the road this postseason, it won't be the location that's at fault.
The Houston Texans
3 of 4The Houston Texans have come from seemingly nowhere to clinch their first playoff berth and AFC South title in franchise history. They're the conference's top team as well and may not have to play on the road at all this postseason.
However, with three games remaining on the season, it's possible that either the Baltimore Ravens or the New England Patriots could end up with home-field advantage in the AFC. If that is the case, it shouldn't bother the Texans in the least.
Considering all of the setbacks the team has managed to overcome this season—losing two quarterbacks and their best defensive player, being without their No. 1 wide receiver, to name just a few—playing on the road come January shouldn't be a problem.
The Green Bay Packers
4 of 4Undefeated on the road, undefeated at home, undefeated period are the 13-0 Green Bay Packers, the defending Super Bowl champions.
Nothing seems to faze this team, as they take on all comers and beat every single one of them. They don't panic and lose close games, they don't give up big leads and they haven't appeared at all intimidated by any of their opponents this year, no matter the venue.
The Packers were on the road throughout their 2010 playoff run, and it didn't seem to shake them—in fact, they only seemed stronger for it. Though they'll have home-field advantage this year, if they had to take to the road in the postseason, it's not likely even the tiniest of problems for this seemingly-invincible team.
