The Cleveland Browns' Coaching Prospects: Anyone Feeling Eric Mangini?

Joe Burgett Dec 29, 2008

As many NFL fans know, especially Cleveland Browns fans, Romeo Crennel is out as the Browns head coach. 24 hours after the Browns GM was fired.

Many guys have been brought up, coordinators, other fired head coaches. But one man has been brought up a couple of times. And it is pretty weird to hear he is even in talks after the ultimate collapse he had with his old team.

That is right, they are thinking about former New York Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini. And I am kind of wondering Brown head guys, uh...why?

See, Mangini had an 8-3 record towards the beginning of the season. He lost the last five or six games of the season. Most recently, against the surprising uprising Miami Dolphins. Which not only knocked the Jets out of the playoffs but kept my Patriots out, too.

This would be the second former New England defensive coach to go into Cleveland if Mangini were hired. Crennel was a former defensive coach with New England and when he left Mangini was promoted to the defensive coordinator there.

He left for the rival Jets and we all know how much hatred is between the Jets and Pats. Now he is out because he was exposed for the none genius he is. He was almost .500 for his career in New York.

Now, it is true he had a QB in Brett Favre who, let's just say, should not had come back. But come on you lose your last couple of games when you looked like the top contender in the AFC and now your out. Browns, are you serious?

You're expected on getting a head coach who is a loser. No offense, but it is true. He has not turned the Jets around really. He had one playoff appearance. And I say appearance lightly; they were one and done.

At least the Cowboys got in twice and lost in the opening game. You got in once and didn't show a thing, Mangini.

The only reason he kept his job was the fact of his popularity within the city of New York. Crennel had a 10-win season last year and now he is out of Cleveland. So if Mangini goes there and loses with them, he'll be gone fast.

It doesn't matter who gets the Browns job to me. They are at least two or three years out of being a better team. They have a good QB in Brady Quinn, whom I think is their future. They have a somewhat good offense if they can sure it up a bit.

I mean, Braylon Edwards was anemic this year, not even close to his season last year. I am surprised with that myself. They have a terrible defense, so much so I don't think terrible is the word to describe it really.

If Mangini does get the job he needs to make sure that the defense gets better. He needs to also hire someone who can work with Quinn, too. Working with a young QB is key in the NFL. Take a look at New England or Indianapolis.

Guys who had young QBs that were like Quinn, thrown in to play and not quite ready bit improved quite a bit. I mean, if you look in New England this year alone, you have seen the transformation of QB Matt Cassel.

Whom do you think is a good fit for the Browns Head Coaching job?
