NFL Ranking: Rating the League's Referees

John BradfordDec 12, 2011

Referees certainly have one of the more difficult jobs in all of sports. No one notices when they do their job right, but those who do something wrong aren’t allowed to forget.

There are some very good refs in the NFL. Unfortunately, the NFL doesn’t release its official ratings. That makes it difficult to know which officials rank as the best. But, a few have managed to leave their mark over the years.

Let’s take a look at a few of the most buzz-worthy NFL referees.

5. Bill Leavy

1 of 5

Bill Leavy can certainly hold his own with any NFL referee. Leavy has worked two Super Bowls in his career and has no trouble keeping players in line. Leavy was a police officer and firefighter in San Jose for over 25 years.

4. Jeff Triplette

2 of 5

The Gulf War veteran knows how to handle himself, but on December 19, 1999 he found himself in an altercation that he wanted no part of.

Triplette was involved in one of the most infamous referee moments in the history of sports when a penalty flag he threw landed in the eye of offensive tackle Orlando Brown. This prompted Brown to lose his temper and shove Triplette to the ground.

Triplette probably watches where he throws his flag a little closer than other officials.

3. Mike Carey

3 of 5

Mike Carey certainly has a lot going for him. In addition to being considered among the best NFL officials, Carey was the first black crew chief in a Super Bowl.

If that’s not enough to land him in these rankings, the guy just exudes coolness.

2. Garth DeFelice

4 of 5

DeFelice isn’t as well known as other officials, but he earned his spot on this list. DeFelice showed off his skills when he tackled Kenneth Darby during a game in 2008.

He also is known for breaking up player altercations. He made news for tossing Justin Smith out of a game after Smith made contact with him.

DeFelice may not look intimidating, but he doesn't back down from anybody.

1. Ed Hochuli

5 of 5

There’s a lot to be impressed with when it comes to Hochuli. When a referee is in better shape than many of the players, you have to be impressed.

At 60 years old, Hochuli looks like he’s itching to get out there at linebacker. Hochuli isn’t just an athlete though. Many don’t know that he is a licensed attorney.

Hochuli began officiating to make money during law school and since 1983 has been a partner in the law firm of Jones, Skelton, and Hochuli.

In other words, don’t pick a fight with Ed Hochuli. He’ll probably win, and if not, he’ll see you in court.
