Scanning the 2009 NFL Mock Drafts
The NFL regular season is over for 20 teams. You can bet that some of them are already looking toward to the 2009 NFL Draft just as many fans are. Over the recent weeks many NFL Mock Drafts have already been popping up. So let’s have a look at some of those Mock Drafts that are already going…
Yesterday I was scanning over the Mock Draft Database at Football Jabber looking for some things that jumped out at me. Eleven of the Mock Drafts had been updated in the last week, which is a good sign for those that browse them often. You can bet more will this week as the NFL Draft order is becoming more clear.
Of the first round draft picks listed for the Detroit Lions, 21 of them were QB’s, nine of them were Sam Bradford. So the popular pick for the first team to go 0-16 is a Quarterback. Makes since, I guess there would not be a better time to start over. With the great talent at O-Line this year we are sure to hear some arguments over how they should use it.
Another team that is starting over in a sense is the Kansas City Chiefs. QB for them too? Here is what The Draft King has to say on that…
"3. Kansas City Chiefs - Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia *
The articles I saw a month or so ago anointing Tyler Thigpen as the quarterback of the future for the Chiefs have disappeared as of late. There’s a reason for this: Kansas City has only two wins.It looked likely that the Chiefs would take a QB high in round one before Carl Peterson stepped down from the team’s GM/president role. But now, with Peterson gone, is seems even more likely that the Chiefs will look to the draft to select a blue chip quarterback.
"
Not so fast! NFL Draft Blitz has Matt Stafford going to the St. Louis Rams in the No. 2 position.
One of the top picks that jumped out at me was USC’s QB, Mark Sanchez, picked by Raul Colon at FF Toolbox. Not a name we hear associated with the top pick much, have to wonder if some homerness is coming into play.
I’m a New Orleans Saints fan myself and I have to say that I do find Sideline Scouting’s first round choice for the Saints a bit puzzling…
"14. New Orleans Saints - RB Chris Wells (Ohio State)*
"
On the surface, this is a mind-boggling selection, but let’s take a dive into the situation. Pierre Thomas and Deuce McAllister are both set to be out of New Orleans this offseason. We all know from his Denver days that Mike Bell is simply not the right guy to have sharing the rock with Reggie Bush. Therefore, we have a strong feeling that the Saints will chase after a running back early in 2009.
Myself, I think it is more than likely the Saints will be happy to keep giving the ball to Pierre Thomas for another year. Their running game is pretty poor, but as we hear about every damn season, they need help on DEFENSE if they even end up with the pick.
(UPDATE: Since writing this Sideline Scouting has changed their pick for the New Orleans Saints to CB Vontae Davis)
