49ers-Redskins: San Francisco Top Washington 27-24, Finish Season at 7-9

NFLGridironGabDec 28, 2008

The San Francisco 49′ers capped off a late season push by defeating the Washington Redskins 27-24. The 49′ers finished the season winning five of their last seven games and cementing Interim coach Mike Singletary as their head coach.

Washington on the other hand didn’t help their rookie head coach gain any stability within their front office as they have now lost four of their last five games.

What was really a back and forth game came right down to the very end to decide a victor. With under two minutes left in the game, the Redskins drove 55 yards for Jason Campbell to cap off the drive by running a two-yard touchdown scramble.

That tied the game at 24-all. Unfortunately for the Skin’s defense, Niners’ quarterback Shaun Hill was up for the challenge. Hill led San Francisco on a one minute drive that set up Joe Nedney to nail a 39-yard game winner.

Jason Campbell threw 18 completions for a total of 156 yards while Clinton Portis added 80 yards and a score on the ground.

49′ers quarterback Shaun Hill went 21-30 with 245 yards and a touchdown in the San Francisco win.

“It’s like coach Singletary said all week: This isn’t the end, this is the beginning,” Hill said. “I think all of us believe that. We don’t ever want to be done in December again.”

After the game, Singletary addressed the media saying “I find myself in the middle of something, feeling very fortunate to be surrounded by all of the good people around me,” said Singletary, who somehow found time to change into a suit in the few minutes between Nedney’s kick and president Jed York’s announcement.

“Now it’s just a matter of continuing to hype it up, continuing to move forward and keep our eyes on the vision that we have,” Singletary said.

49ers finish the season with a record of 7-9. 5-4 under Singletary. Jim Zorn and the Redskins finish their season at 8-8. They have now lost seven of their last 11.
