There wasn't much of a game, but maybe the Musketeers and Bearcats felt compelled to entertain the crowd at the Cintas Center a bit more—with a bench clearing brawl.
With only 9.4 seconds remaining in a 23-point beating in favor of Xavier, a brawl broke out in front of the Cincinnati bench. The game was called, as too much confusion ensued to continue.
There had been pushing, shoving and jawing between the teams all game. Both teams are Cincinnati based, of course, and the rivalry seemed to go to a new level in this game.
The brawl became quite nasty. Xavier big man Kenny Frease wore the most visible sign of the fights' vicious nature, as he received a bloody eye and face from a punch thrown by Bearcats' Yancy Gates. Coincidentally, these two were the top performers in the game; Gates led all scores with 18 points and Frease had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Believe me, there won't be a bigger right hand thrown by Amir Khan, Jon Jones or Lyoto Machida tonight in their respective bouts.
Whenever you see a fight of this magnitude on a basketball court, you can't help but think back to the Malice in the Palace, when Ron Artest's life and career were forever changed.
Thankfully, there was no fan involvement in this brawl, but nonetheless, there will be consequences to all players involved.
I would expect suspensions for several players on both sides, as officials were immediately taking a look at the the events that transpired right before the brawl started.
Who knew what is shaping up as an impressive night of combat sports would have an under-card event in Ohio, on a basketball court.
