Terrell Owens Needs Football More Than Ever After Failing to Pay Child Support

Justin WeltonDec 10, 2011

Terrell Owens misses the game of football for different reasons than one may think. We all could presume that the 15-year NFL professional misses football because of his passion for the game and that probably is true.

However, could it also be because Owens needs the game because of financial issues? Yes, apparently that’s also true.

Owens failed to pay child support to Melanie Paige Smith for the third time in six months. He is supposed to give $5,000 to Smith, the mother of his children, every month.

That sounds like a big bill for someone like me, but not a former professional athlete, right? Wrong.

Apparently Owens has struggled financially in recent months. I’m not sure how—even if he is required to give up $5,000 dollars per month—he would be struggling with money, but it seems evident.

You would think that he would have some type of savings after the millions upon millions of dollars he made, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Not only has Owens displayed his troubles on his reality TV show, but he has made some weird purchases as well. Owens, with a little encouragement from an attorney, invested $2 million dollars in a bingo hall.

A bingo hall. Really?

Needless to say, Owens sued that attorney.

Owens needs to make some money in the NFL and apparently he needs to do it fast. No team seems to be interested in the former pro bowler, but maybe one could become available. It’s not looking promising for this campaign, though.

I would say that teams will look deeper into Owens next season, when they know he is fully healthy. Remember, Owens had a very productive campaign last year at Cincinnati. He caught 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns.

There are several teams that need a wide receiver. It takes only one to be willing to accept everything Owens would bring to their team.

The last thing I expected from Owens would be financial issues. He has made millions playing football and he’s a reality star—you would think that he’s set.

Owens needs to get back to the game he loves. Not only will that bring him some sense of relief from his life, but he will also earn some extra dough.

All Owens needs is a suitor and maybe we’ll see him back on the football field come 2012.
