Bulls-Huskies: Craig Austrie's Floater Saves The Day For UConn

Sean StancillFeb 16, 2008

How far can they go?

I thought that the Huskies were going to lose last week and the week before that.

If I can rephrase lyrics by rapper Too Short, they go on and on, can't understand how they last so long, they must have superpowers, Price and Austire always the men of the hour.

Anyway, back to the game. Craig Austrie delivered a clutch runner in the lane with 0.2 seconds left in O.T. to send the #17 Huskies over unranked South Florida.

In a game that turned out to be a nail biter, UCONN pulled it off thanks to A.J. Price's 5-0 run to begin overtime and of course Criag's game winning shot. Price led the dogs in scoring with 23 and Hasheem Thabeet the team's defensive anchor had six points, nine rebounds, and eight blocked shots in 39 minutes of action.

Senior C Kentrell Grandsberry scored a game-high 26 points and teammate Jesus Verdejo contributed 17 as USF almost pulled off the upset.

The game began evenly matched, as the Bulls jumped out to a early 6-1 run to open the game. UConn battled throughout the first half as Doug Wiggins layup with 1:33 gave them the halftime lead, 27-26.

The teams continued to play neck and neck and it went down to the wire with Jim Calhoun's team leading 65-62 with 34 seconds to go. USF inbounded the ball and found Verdejo for the last basket in regulation, a three to send the game into overtime.

O.T. tipped off, and that's when A.J. Price became Kobe Bryant. Price went on a fury scoring on UCONN's first three possessions (2 jumpers and a free throw on in a 2:10 span). However even after that his team still trailed 71-70.

The teams went on to trade baskets on their next respective possessions and that lead to the Bulls leading 73-72 with 13 seconds left.

However, Craig Austire was cool as cucumber and sank the decisive runner with 0.2 and clinched the game for his team.

With the win, Jim Calhoun's team goes to 20-5, and USF drops to 11-15.
