West Virginia Will Be Better Without Rich Rodriguez

Michael DeHartFeb 16, 2008

Have you ever just had one of those days? Or better yet, one of those weeks.

Well to be honest with you, West Virginia University, boosters, fans and most of all, WVU players are has having one of those months.

One that has left fans in disbelief, disarray, disappointed, disenfranchised, disheartened and just plain ole' DISGUSTED!

If the debacle of the last game of the season was not enough. Good ole' Rich decided to add insult to injury by "thumbing his nose" at WVU and moving on to Ann Arbor to become the head coach at Michigan.

Now I truly DO NOT hold a grudge against Michigan. It is a fantastic University that has a rich tradition and storied past that is above impressive and beyond reproach. However, I do find fault with coach Rod too the tune of $2.5 Million.

Rodriguez's decision was made within minutes of the offer and his greed and ego overtook his ability to remember all the promises he made to WVU boosters, team members and fans.

In my humble opinion (and this is pure speculation), Coach Rod had not been in the hunt for a new position and was truly happy at WVU. But when Michigan had failed in finding a coach its boosters approved of, pressure came from the athletic director, with help from Dandy Don Nehlen and backstabbing John Berlin.

Both contacted Rich to get him to at least listen to what they had to offer. Once this meeting took place (in supposed secrecy), Rodriguez had pretty much decided to accept, but wanted to see what WVU might do, again.

Rich did not expect the media to break the story and before he left Toledo for Morgantown, it broke, and he was now painted into a corner. Rodriguez still tried to get WVU to "counter offer" (this was the reason for the first meeting with Pastilong) and then the second meeting was Pastilong's answer, which was a resounding

"No, but thanks anyway and don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out!"

Harsh? Bitter?

Absolutely, categorically.

Why? Well, if you are a WVU Fan and/or a West Virginian, you'll know the promises Rod made after the Bama debacle and again, just two weeks before. Basically he said, "We are stuck with him for a long time, he wasn't going anywhere and that he would be the coach of the Mountaineers as long as they would have him.

One MAJOR issue I have with the media is they won't even report any of this to the general public, so WVU and its fans will look childish when complaining about these issues. Remember this above all else. West Virginians believe in Family and a Man's word. Period. No questions asked.

The point is, Rodriguez is not trustworthy, unethical, and a liar to all involved from the WVU side of the fence.

Yeah, I know it is sour grapes. But when he stayed last year, all of WVU's people put forth a concerted effort to provide each and everything that this spoiled, egotistical brat asked for. (There is the sour grapes for you!)

Raises were given to Rodriguez and his assistants, while facilities were added and major upgrades were made. Ticket prices increased and boosters forked out several millions of their own to provide each and everything he asked for.

The dedicated fans bought tickets and season passes without question. WVU stood behind their team and their coach 1000 percent.

So, why did Rod not return the love? Why did Rod not return the loyalty? He didn't because of Ego, Greed, Untrustworthiness, but most of all EGO.

So, Michigan fans, your University got another Mountaineer coach. Good for you. But let me say two things. First, I better never ever ever hear a Michigan fan trash or talk down to WVU. Because you obviously agree that WVU has good teams if you wanted both our basketball coach and then our football coach.

Now I don't say this to start an argument. I just believe that the Wolverines got two exceptionally good coaches. Secondly, I want to thank all of the various fans from Michigan, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, USF, Louisville, UConn and many others that gave WVU fans their concern and props over the past weeks.

My last point on Rodriguez is as follows. Michigan fans, I hope you do not put all your trust into Rod, because I consider him no better than Nick Saban or Bobby Petrino.

He lied to us, so don't be surprised if he won't do the same to you. I hope not, because it is not fun having your trust discarded. Oh well, enough said on that matter.

Good luck Michigan and UM fans. I do hope you have success (except if WVU ever plays UM in the future). I just hope you realize that Rod is just a little two-faced and a lot egotistical.
