NFL Power Rankings: Where Did CBS Sports Go Wrong?

Tim DanielsDec 6, 2011

When it comes to NFL power rankings, no two people are going to place all 32 teams in the same order. For example, Pete Prisco of CBS Sports just released his fresh batch of ranks, and there are some head-scratching placements.

Here are three instances where CBS Sports went wrong and for the sake of comparison, my full power rankings table is below.

No. 26 San Diego Chargers

The Chargers go out on Monday night and finally look like the team everybody expects but Prisco decides to drop them three spots. Even though a road win against Jacksonville isn't much to write home about, it kept San Diego's playoff hopes alive.

They sit just two games behind the Broncos and Raiders with four weeks to play. The Chargers are notorious for their late-season heroics, so it's too early to count them out. And it's certainly a stretch to consider them one of the league's worst teams.

No. 21 Philadelphia Eagles

Prisco isn't the only expert who is still showing some respect for Philadelphia's talent level, but in reality it's time to focus only on the results, and they haven't been pretty. The Eagles just got clobbered on the road by the Seahawks, who are inexplicably behind Philly in CBS' rankings.

There just isn't much to like about the Eagles. They are 1-5 at home and haven't shown enough fire in recent weeks to believe any type of resurgence is on the horizon. Anybody who places them higher than 25th is living purely off preseason reputation.

No. 8 Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta's a good team that will likely claim a wild-card spot, but are they a top-eight squad after losing to the Matt Schaub-less Texans? Probably not. The Falcons have a favorable schedule down the stretch, so they might reach that point by season's end. Just not right now.

It's tough not to wonder why their offense isn't among the elite in terms of points scored (17th). Between Michael Turner, Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez, there should be more than enough weapons for Matt Ryan to utilize in order to put them up there with the Saints and Patriots.
