4 NFL Commentators Who Should Never Open Their Mouths About Football Again
Now, it's easy to hate on commentators. As fans, of course we are going to be biased when they have bad things to say about our team. But some guys just need to either take up another sport to comment on or get out of the broadcasting industry.
Here are four guys that need to stop talking about football as soon as possible.
Jim Nantz
1 of 4If Jim Nantz is calling a game and a player gets, say, an excessive celebration penalty, prepare for a lecture from "holier than thou" Jim Nantz.
We get it: Those kinds of dumb penalties are, well, dumb. But Nantz fails to realize that football is an emotional game, and these things happen from time to time. Just because DeSean Jackson did a little dance does not make him a criminal.
Nantz and his condescending attitude should stick to golf.
Phil Simms
2 of 4You would think a Super Bowl-winning quarterback would be able to dissect a game fairly quickly and know all of the rules.
Last week was a prime example. Devin Hester tried, and failed, to block a long field-goal attempt at the goal post. Simms declared that to be a perfectly legal play. Turns out, that is actually "goaltending," and had Hester actually blocked it, it would have counted anyway.
It's not just this incident. I cannot recall how many times Simms has said one thing about a play, then completely changed his stance after seeing a replay. It's like he makes up analysis on the fly, then corrects it with a replay.
Simms is an accomplished quarterback, but he's just not the best media personality.
Joe Buck
3 of 4The issues with Joe Buck are obvious: In the game's biggest moments, he fails to come up with the "classic" call. The man simply shows little to no emotion when calling football games.
Just listen to his call on the famous Tyree catch in Super Bowl 42. You would not have been able to tell if it Tyree made that catch in preseason or on the game's biggest stage based on his monotone-call.
Perhaps Buck's lifeless voice is best suited for baseball.
Al Michaels
4 of 4I can't really put a finger on why Michaels annoys me as a broadcaster. A lot of it has to do with his really awful jokes and puns that he tries to tell to Chris Collinsworth (who is an excellent analyst himself). Maybe it's how he calls a lot of big plays in an awkward fashion. Perhaps it's just that his voice makes it sound like he is whining all game.
Either way, I would really appreciate if they matched Collinsworth with another play-by-play man, because Collinsworth is too good at what he does to be droned out by Al every game.
