The Cleveland Browns Have Reasons to Be Optimistic

Wayne MartinDec 24, 2008

I know, here we go again. Looking with anticipation to another offseason of coaching changes, free agents, and the draft. Seems like a cycle we as Browns fans are all too accustomed too. Every three to four years whether we need it or not, we are in the market for a new coach and philosophy.

I hope this time the team gets it right.

This season has been beyond a disappointment. Here we sit, 10 years since our return, looking for a new coach and direction. Just Look how many other teams were at the top when the Browns came back and have since reloaded for another run. Not to mention teams like Atlanta and Miami that have turned their teams' fortunes around in one year. This shows with proper coaching and personnel selection, fortunes can change quickly in the NFL.

Let's take a moment and review what we do have to build on, that perhaps makes us attractive to one of the top flight former head coaches or coordinators. First off, we have two young talented quarterbacks on the roster, a solid left tackle and guard, and some talent at the skill positions. Draft or bring in some help on the offensive line and possibly a WR and RB, with some good coaching we can be formidable.

On defense, we have a solid but not spectacular line and some talent in the secondary. I view the problem here is more scheme-related. Bring in a LB or Safety with some ability, and attitude can make a big difference.

The shelves here are not empty. I think Savage has done a good job with the draft and free agents. At least better than the previous regimes. I view Savage as a young guy who has made some mistakes, but has an upside with potential. He has an eye for talent. I would hate to see him get away, as he could be the Belichick of GM's.

I like the idea of bringing in a coach with previous head coaching experience such as Cowher, Billick, Fossel, Martz or Marty, but would consider a coordinator with some fire. If we bring in a coordinator, he must be young, late 30's to early 40's with a track record. If we go the coordinator route, we need to be prepared to have some missteps.

It is imperative that we get this next selection(s) correct, and get this thing turned around. I have seen a number of longtime fans losing interest, and young kids are following other teams.

Mr. Lerner, its time to get this thing corrected. The fans have been waiting in some cases, a lifetime for a championship.

P.S. Lets get a logo, or at least use the ones we have. We need an identity bad.
