2012 NFL Draft: 5 Teams That Should Forget About 2011 and Focus on Future

Daniel BarnesDec 1, 2011

The "Suck for Luck" contest is practically over. The Colts are in a commanding lead, two games up on everyone else with no winnable games (at least, none that they should win) left in the schedule.

The Colts have nothing to gain from the rest of the season, so they really shouldn't worry about it too much. Their best bet is to focus on the future instead.

However, they aren't the only ones. There's quite a few teams who might wanna just phone it in for the time being and start thinking about rebuilding. Here are five.

Indianapolis Colts

1 of 5

An 0-11 record sounds pretty bad doesn't it? Well, it is.

You know what else is bad? Their opponents have scored more than twice as many points as they have, and they've played the likes of the Browns, the Chiefs, the Jaguars and the Panthers.

Luckily for the Colts (see what I did there?), they'll have the first overall pick this year, and if they want him, they can have Andrew Luck.

Or, if Peyton will return, they can trade down to a quarterback hungry team for a king's ransom, especially if Matt Barkley or Robert Griffin III decide to stay in school one more year.

The Colts are an older team, so if they're gonna start rebuilding, they should start now. Put in the young backups and see if any shine. You'll need to know what you have when the draft rolls around.

St. Louis Rams

2 of 5

The Rams are set at quarterback, but still have a couple of holes to fill, and those holes are enormous. They sit at 2-9 along with Minnesota, but a couple of more wins could leave them wanting when the two guys they need the most are off the board (Matt Kalil and Justin Blackmon).

If they get carried away and win too many games, they'll miss out on the top prospects at wide receiver and left tackle and will sit facing the decision to either reach for the next best at that position, or take the best player available.

Their season is over. Start thinking 2012.

Minnesota Vikings

3 of 5

Everyone has heard "Suck for Luck" all season, but the Vikings might be "Falling Flat for Matt."

Matt Kalil may be the best left tackle prospect since Jake Long. He's beaten everyone he was paired up against, he comes from a football family (his big brother is already a two-time Pro Bowler), and he forced last year's top tackle, Tyron Smith, to play right tackle.

He's got the size, he's got the tape, he's got the attitude, he's the definition of a stud prospect.

However, the Rams will want him too, so the Vikings better be careful not to win many (if any) more games if they want him.

Besides, they've won two games and they still have to play their other division opponents, all three of whom might be in the playoffs.

Seattle Seahawks

4 of 5

The Seahawks have the best record on this list: 4-7, but that's still terrible. The Seahawks are a semi-complete team though, but their biggest need is a huge one: quarterback.

While 2012 may be a ridiculously strong quarterback class, two top prospects may be staying where they are. Rumors are that Matt Barkley and Robert Griffin III both want to stay in school. If they do, that spells trouble for the Seahawks.

If the draft were today, the Seahawks would be picking as high as seventh or as low as 14th. If Griffin and Barkley stay in school, then there will only be Andrew Luck and Landry Jones that sure-fire first-rounders, and both would likely be off the board when Seattle picked.

They better hope that the Browns, Chiefs, Chargers, Cardinals, Eagles and Redskins all win at least one more if they want a chance at a top quarterback prospect.

Jacksonville Jaguars

5 of 5

Blaine Gabbert has been terrible this season, but after they spent the 10th pick on him, the Jaguars are unlikely to pick a new quarterback, even with a top pick, a top prospect on the board and a new head coach.

However, they do have a lot of holes that need to be filled beyond the first round. They need receivers, maybe more than one, they could use a cornerback and a pass rusher among other things.

The Jaguars have to prepare for what will happen if Gabbert doesn't improve by filling their other needs this year. They already have a solid defense, but there's still room for improvement. Forget 2011 and start thinking about 2012...or 2015, maybe.
