Old School: Looking Back on the Boston Celtics-Los Angeles Lakers of the 80s
The NBA was never greater than in the eighties.
What made the game so much fun to watch, its quite simply the teams. One player did not dominate the whole decade.
The Celtics and Lakers and Pistons and Sixers all played as a team. The NBA is slowly getting back to its roots.
Jordan came into the league in the late eighties and people went ga-ga over him. Sure, Jordan was good, but he would score 150 points a night and still lose.
Only when the Bulls added Pippen did the championships start to fly. The same will happen with Lebron.
For me watching and adoring just one player is dreadful. I could care less about Lebron's Kingdom.
Lebron's Kingdom will be another Never Never land if he does not get help soon.
How could you not like the Coast to Coast matchups between the Lakers vs Celtics? It was blue collar vs white collar. Suits vs Lunch pals. Mercedes vs Pintos.
Peckerwoods vs Inglewood, Celtic players had looks of some of the cast memebers of "One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest, while the Lakers players looked like fill-ins on "The Arsenio Hall Show."
There was nothing lukewarm about this series, you were either a Celtics Fan or Lakers Fan, nothing in the middle. Cut and dry.
I have yet to see a Coast to Coast series like the one between the Lakers and Celtics of the past.
Something tells me history is about to repeat itself. One thing is for sure, the speedo pants of the eighties will never be used again.
Get ready for a Lakers -Celtics matchup in 2008. With baggy pants of course.
