Week 13 Waiver Wire Pickups: Players You Should Approach with Caution

Zach KruseDec 1, 2011

You might want to think twice before you put in a Week 13 waiver wire claim on the following five players:

Rex Grossman, Redskins

Grossman has thrown for more than 290 yards with two scores in back-to-back games. However, like we saw earlier this season, the real Rex will eventually show his face soon.

I'd bet on him doing so this weekend, when the Redskins welcome the New York Jets and their stingy pass defense in Week 13. A string of turnovers will erase any fantasy value he could potentially have.

Caleb Hanie, Bears

Hanie threw for over 250 yards and added another 50 rushing against the Raiders on Sunday, but it's hard to forget about his three interceptions and obvious lack of starting experience.

While the Chiefs have had their struggles in pass defense this season, they've held opponents to under 200 yards in two of their last three games. Hanie is a guy who shouldn't be counted on fantasy-wise.

Toby Gerhart, Vikings

Adrian Peterson is likely to be out for another week. In his place, Gerhart saw 17 carries last Sunday. However, he only rushed for 44 yards on those 17 carries and blew one of his two goal-line carries. Percy Harvin might also take rushes away from him, too.

Meanwhile, don't forget about the Broncos defense he'll be facing. That is, the same unit that's allowed over 100 yards to opposing backs just three times this season.

Anthony Armstrong, Redskins

After just one catch in his previous eight games, Armstrong finally found the end zone in 2011 with a 50-yard touchdown reception against the Seahawks.

Has he found his explosiveness from 2010, when he had 44 receptions and averaged almost 20 yards per catch? I wouldn't bank on it. Santana Moss, Jabar Gaffney and Fred Davis all see too many targets for Armstrong to be a consistent fantasy option.

Brad Smith, Bills

Smith has become more of a factor in the Bills' passing game over the last two weeks, and he scored his first receiving touchdown of the season against the Jets on Sunday.

Still, Smith had just eight total catches before this week, and he's the fourth or fifth option in the Bills' passing game. Unless there is an injury in front of him, I'm not sure Smith will be much of a fantasy factor.
