Georgia vs. LSU: Would You Rather Have Mark Richt or Les Miles at the Helm?

Danny FlynnNov 30, 2011

This weekend’s SEC championship game between No. 1 LSU and No. 14 Georgia will feature two of the conference’s top coaches, LSU’s Les Miles and Georgia’s Mark Richt.

Miles has been the hottest coach of this season, as he’s guided the Tigers to an undefeated 12-0 record, and now has them on the doorstep of the BCS national championship game.

Richt, on the other hand, actually has the better overall coaching resume, with two SEC championships, three BCS bowl appearances and four division titles under his belt in his 10 seasons in Athens, Ga.

Richt’s been to Atlanta four times and he knows how to deal with a game the magnitude of the SEC championship.

Georgia is a 13-point underdog against the top-ranked Tigers, but the Bulldogs will be playing with a nothing-to-lose, pressure-free attitude on Saturday.

When Richt’s teams don’t play tight, they can run with anybody, and with a defense that is pretty stout in its own right, Georgia will be ready to battle in Atlanta.

Both of these coaches will have their teams prepared for the showdown, but the question is, which coach has the edge?

Miles has an evident special bond with his players, and he really does know how to coach today’s top-notch college athletes. But as a game-day coach, he sure has made some funky choices in big-time situations in recent years.

Luckily for the Mad Hatter, though, he’s usually had things break in his favor.

Richt, on the other hand, is a little more strait-laced than Miles, but you can’t argue with the consistent success he’s had at Georgia for a decade (one bad season doesn’t mean you should fire the guy).

Personally, if it were my favorite team playing for a conference championship on Saturday, I would want Les Miles leading my players out of the tunnel.

Miles has made all the right moves and he’s managed his team perfectly this season, and the type of swagger and attitude he has LSU playing with right now is almost unprecedented.

Miles has flat out been the best coach in college football this season, and his team’s performance on the field has been a direct reflection of the great work he’s done this year.

Miles will have his Tigers roaring, and they’ll treat Georgia just like they treat every other opponent. They don’t view games as games, they view games as chances to make a statement to the rest of the college football world.

They’ve made 12 of them already this season, and on Saturday, they’ll be looking to hammer home No. 13 for Miles.
