Week 13 Fantasy Rankings: Quarterbacks with the Worst Matchups

Zachary D. RymerNov 30, 2011

Most owners don't have to worry about their quarterback position every week. Like some of these fancy coffeemakers they have these days, you just have to set it and forget it.

However, I do think it helps to look at which team your quarterback is facing. Look even closer, and you may notice that your quarterback actually has a pretty tough matchup on his hands.

Allow me to save you the trouble. In looking at the Week 13 NFL slate, I see four quarterbacks in particular that have their work cut out for them. If you own one of them, consider this a fair warning.

4. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers

Is it just me, or is Philip Rivers getting worse every week? Goodness knows he's not getting any better.

Nor will he against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night. Say what you will about the Jags offense, but their defense is pretty strong. They're currently fourth in the NFL in passing defense, and it's worth noting that they haven't let any quarterback throw for more than 225 yards against them since Week 4.

Given the way Rivers is playing these days, I don't see any reason he would break up the streak. He's a risky play to begin with, but I'd say this matchup is one that should put him on your bench.

3. Colt McCoy, Cleveland Browns

He wasn't very efficient with his throws, but Colt McCoy ended up posting solid numbers against the Bengals on Sunday. He passed for 151 yards and two touchdowns, throwing just one interception.

Don't expect McCoy to be as good or any better against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. They have the league's fifth-ranked pass defense, they're going to be well-rested, and they're coming off a game in which they destroyed Alex Smith.

I don't think McCoy will be destroyed as badly as Smith was. Nevertheless, I think it's fair to say that he's going to be in for a long day at the office.

2. Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals

Andy Dalton has done well to surpass expectations this season, but he was humbled in two games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, the AFC North's traditional powerhouse teams.

Dalton is going to get another crack at the Steelers on Sunday, except the difference this time is that he and the Bengals will be playing at Pittsburgh. That's not going to make things any easier for Dalton, who will have it hard enough going up against the league's No. 3 pass defense.

So if you have somebody else you can start at quarterback, I'd consider making the switch.

1. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons

Matt Ryan has gotten hot at the right time. He's thrown nine touchdown passes and just two interceptions in his last four games, and the Falcons have won three of them.

I'm expecting Ryan to come back to earth a little against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Texans are an elite defensive team, and they're playing very well right now. The Texans haven't allowed any quarterback to throw for more than 200 yards against them since Week 6.

In that time, the Texans have allowed four touchdown passes while picking off nine passes.

I'm not going to recommend benching Ryan. However, I do recommend that you proceed with caution.
