Georgia Football: Bulldogs Have a Very Good Chance to Win the SEC Title
It’s safe to say the Georgia Bulldogs will face their toughest competition all year when they face the LSU Tigers on Saturday for the SEC Championship.
It’s well-known that LSU comes into the game as a huge favorite, but the Bulldogs do have a very good chance of taking down the No. 1 team in all the land.
Why do they have a good chance of winning? Because the Bulldogs are a team that has gotten better each game, and like the Tigers, they come into the game on a roll.
At the start of the season, many experts thought the Bulldogs would win the SEC East. But, when they lost to Boise State and South Carolina to start the year 0-2, things looked like they were headed downhill.
However, one of the reasons that the Bulldogs can beat a team like LSU is the steady hand of head coach Mark Richt. He was taking a lot of heat after the 0-2 start, but he was very calm and knew his team would get back on track.
They did exactly that because Richt’s attitude carried over to his players, and they ended up winning the rest of their regular season games because they never gave up.
When things were not going their way, they stayed calm and remained focused. As much heat as Richt has gotten the last two years, he deserves a lot of credit for the job he’s done, and he will have his players ready to go on Saturday.
Another reason the Bulldogs can win is the play of Aaron Murray. Make no mistake about it, the Tigers are the top team in the land, which makes them the top team in the SEC. But, if they had a quarterback like Murray, they would be unstoppable.
Murray has played great football all season long and is starting to come into his own. He distributes the ball well to all of his targets, he knows when to get rid of the football, and he can scramble if the time calls for it.
LSU knows this, and they will do whatever it takes to rattle Murray. And because the Tigers’ defense is so strong, there are going to be times where Murray will be frustrated. But at the same time, this could be Murray’s signature game because he has yet to have that defining win in his young career.
Another reason the Bulldogs can win on Saturday is the play of the defense. All season long, the talk has been about LSU and Alabama’s defense and how aggressive they play. But, Georgia is right behind the two and could really give LSU fits on Saturday.
Jarvis Jones leads the SEC in sacks, and Bacarri Rambo leads the SEC in interceptions. You mix that in with a stout run defense led by John Jenkins, Alec Ogletree, Christian Robinson and Abry Jones, and the Bulldogs should make things interesting on Saturday.
When it comes down to it, LSU is the better team, and they have played like the No. 1 team all season long. But, Georgia has done everything they've had to do to earn a spot in the title game, and the Bulldogs should not and will not be overlooked.
Many critics of Georgia say they have not played anybody that is on the same level as LSU. There’s no argument there, but the Bulldogs will come into Saturday’s game with a lot of confidence. And like LSU, they are playing great football.
No matter who wins on Saturday, it will be a very competitive contest, and fans of the SEC—or college football in general—should watch this game and see why the SEC has won five consecutive BCS titles.
