NBA Rumors: Chicago Bulls Must Sign Brandon Roy if Portland Does Amnesty Him
With the potential revision of the amnesty clause within the upcoming NBA CBA, there will be lots of speculation of players who will be released. One of those players could be the Portland Trailblazers' oft-injured combo guard Brandon Roy. If released, Roy should be the Chicago Bulls' new No. 1 target to fulfill their need at guard.
Roy comes with risks, but in the end he could certainly be a huge payoff for the Bulls. He has been injured a lot over the years, but when he is healthy he is one of the better players in the league. It would allow the Bulls, who went 62-20 last season, to become the most sound team in the NBA. Although the Miami Heat would still be a team to reckon with, a lineup of Derrick Rose, Roy, Carlos Boozer, Luol Deng and Joakim Noah would be sure to give many teams a headache.
Over his career, Roy has averaged 19.0 PPG. All the Bulls really need is someone who can score around 10 each game, but the more the better. With injuries cutting down on the play of secondary scorers like Boozer last year, the Bulls need to sign a guy who can score in relief just in case Boozer goes down again. His history proves that is likely.
While Roy may be more expensive then a guy like Jason Richardson or Tracy McGrady, there is no doubt that he presents a young option that wouldn't just be a one- or two-season answer. He could potentially be apart of this team for a long time and help them develop into a consistent threat for years to come.
With Rose being the primary ball handler, the pressure will be taken off of Roy. Roy has often been the guy to create the shots and handle the movement in the Blazers' system. In Chicago, he would really just be an addition to Rose's arsenal. While it would be great to have Roy be able to take the ball to the rim, he wouldn't have to worry so much about that as Rose would likely open up the floor for Roy to be able to shoot.
At 27 years old, Roy would most definitely be the best option for the Bulls. In just four seasons, he has shown that he has the mindset of a veteran, and he could easily help this Bulls team elevate to the next level. It could be a risk, but that risk could come with a huge payoff.
Once the terms of the amnesty clause are set, there is no doubt that things could potentially get not only exciting—but crazy.
