Urban Meyer: Why Penn State Is Better Off without Two-Faced Coach

Donald WoodNov 29, 2011

The Penn State Nittany Lions community feels like it has lost out in the Urban Meyer sweepstakes. They shouldn’t feel bad at all.

There may not be a more two-faced coach in all of athletics than Meyer. Like a gold-digging woman, Meyer has stepped on every toe to step up the ladder.

He traded up from Bowling Green to Utah and from Utah to Florida. There is no loyalty with Urban Meyer, just faux enthusiasm until it’s time to take his train wreck elsewhere.

As if running around on all the schools weren’t bad enough, when things in Florida got tough without Tim Tebow in the lineup, Meyer quit.

While fans shouldn’t feel bad for a coach that lies constantly to the fans and media (look at this whole Ohio State situation), Meyer plays on people’s heart strings to ease the pressure.

It’s called manipulation.

"

I showed this to Gene (Smith, Ohio State's athletic director) not long ago. This is a contract that my kids made me sign before I was allowed to sign a real contract. It's tougher than any other contract I've signed in my life. So yeah, a lot of thought (went into accepting this job). I don't want to spend all day talking about that, but I feel very blessed to be able to stand here, to know where I was and where I don't want to go again. And maybe help others.

"

It’s an ugly truth, but the reason Meyer is able to recruit so well is because he knows how to manipulate people. He knows what impressionable kids want to hear and promises them the world.

All the talk of family means nothing when Meyer is clearly a fraud. His family is just another pawn in his chess game with the media. That’s why they were there at the Ohio State press conference.

Penn State doesn’t need that.

With the biggest scandal in sports history disgracing the greatest college football coach of all time, Penn State has enough to deal with. The last thing they need is a coach like Urban Meyer walking in and quitting after two seasons.

No one can follow Joe Paterno, so hire a relative unknown and let him struggle for a few seasons. After his unsuccessful reign, then the program can hire a big name coach looking to resurrect a dying team.
