Urban Meyer to Ohio State: Why Meyer Will Fail Miserably Without Tim Tebow

Donald WoodNov 28, 2011

Urban Meyer is the new head coach of Ohio State’s football program, but the experiment will be a failure for Buckeye nation.

Why? There is no Tim Tebow.

Ohio State wants the man that walked into the Utah program and turned it around. They also want the man that went into Florida and proceeded to rule the world with Tebow.

While people will say that Meyer’s success was not dependent on Tim Tebow, there is no way he would be regarded as highly as he is if he didn't coach the greatest college quarterback to ever play the game.

Not only did Meyer get to Florida after the smoke from Steve Spurrier’s reign and subsequent departure had cleared, the fans were clamoring for a new face to lead them back to prominence.

In 2005, Meyer’s first season with the Gators, he managed a solid 9-3 record. That is fine, but not the level of excellence demanded from a coach at Florida.

Meyer’s success started the following season when Tim Tebow decided to take his talents to the swamp. While Tebow didn’t start in 2006, Meyer played him enough for him to play a huge part in the teams’ BCS championship that season.

With Tebow at the helm for the next three seasons, the Florida Gators enjoyed a success hardly ever seen in the sports world.

Tim Tebow ran that offense the way it should have been run. Meyer was more of a spectator to Tebow’s talents than a coach most of the time.

Tebow went on to win another BCS National Championship, a Heisman Trophy and score 144 touchdowns while at Florida. When you get that much production from a player, there isn’t much a coach can do to keep a team from winning.

After finishing the 2009 season, the dynamic duo were forced to split up. While Tebow showed that he could be a man and handle life without the other, Urban Meyer fell apart.

Meyer tried to quit on the Gators, but he gave one last half effort without Tebow. The 7-5 record and the lack of talent around him made it easy for him to take the easy way out.

While Meyer has been a winner in his college career, how good of an actual coach he can be is debatable. The overrated coach will fit in perfect with a program that thinks it’s better than it actually is.

Enjoy mediocrity Buckeye fans.
