SEC Championship Game 2011: Georgia Will Pull Upset of the Century vs. LSU

T.J. McaloonNov 28, 2011

The SEC Championship game is just a big celebration for the LSU Tigers as the best team in college football.

However, as ESPN Game Day’s Leo Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend.” Georgia is not some pushover team from the SEC East division and they have a great chance at upsetting LSU.

LSU has one major flaw on this team that can bring it down like the Death Star in Star Wars. This flaw was discovered back in LSU’s 9-6 overtime victory over Alabama. When their running game is contained, they cannot dominate opponents with their passing attack.

In the Alabama game, LSU had a total of 91 passing yards between two quarterbacks. LSU completely ditched the passing attack after Jarrett Lee’s second interception in his seventh passing attempt.

For the game, LSU threw 17 passing attempts with nine completions, while running the ball 41 times for 148 yards.

Alabama didn’t get overwhelmed by LSU’s running game, they contained it. Just like ‘Bama, Georgia cannot focus on holding the Tigers offense to under 100 rushing yards. They will not and in the end it will leave them open to a big passing play.

Instead Georgia has to hold LSU to field goals, just like Alabama did.

What Georgia has that Alabama did not is a great passing attack.

Since Georgia went on their 10-win run, they have seen quarterback Aaron Murray throw an amazing 29 touchdown passes to eight interceptions. In fact, in games against SEC West opponents, Murray is 3-0 with eight touchdowns to four interceptions. Three of those interceptions came in one game against Mississippi State.

Coming into this SEC Championship game, The Bulldogs defense is playing a tight defense, holding teams to 17 points or less in eight of their last 10 games.

In those 10 straight victories, the Bulldogs defense has held seven opposing teams to under 200 passing yards. In two of those games where they allowed Florida and Tennessee to over 200 passing yards, they held those offenses to negative rushing yards.

Georgia has a huge chance at pulling off a major upset in front of their fans in the Georgia Dome. The Bulldogs are a 13-point underdog in this game and are not getting the respect that they rightfully deserve.

Do not sleep on the Bulldogs in this game, because they will sneak up on the Tigers and force their way into the Sugar Bowl as the SEC Champions.
