Urban Meyer's Reported Deal with Ohio State Still Leaves Unanswered Questions

Tim DanielsNov 28, 2011

Urban Meyer is set to become the next head football coach at Ohio State, according to ESPN. Rumors surfaced last week about the former Florida coach taking over the Buckeyes, but an agreement still leaves a lot of questions to be answered.

Most notably, what about those family and health concerns Meyer attributed his departure from Florida to?

While it's not unreasonable to believe family problems could be sorted out in the 10 months since his final game with the Gators, health issues would seem to need more care. Especially since he'll be entering a pressure-packed environment like coaching college football.

Meyer's previous health scares were due to stress, something he'll be unable to avoid while trying to get Ohio State's prestigious football program back on the road to national titles.

And what will happen if more complications arise within a few months of taking the job? He'd be putting himself at risk by continuing to fight through the pain but, if he resigned, he'd catch more flack for taking the job in the first place.

You'd hope Meyer received a clean bill of health from his doctor, along with the go ahead to get back into coaching, before signing on the dotted line.

Another question will be surround his previous denials about the job. He spent the better part of a week saying he wasn't offered the job, only for his agent to confirm the reports this morning.

If Meyer knew he was on the verge of accepting a position with Ohio State, he should have just remained silent instead of issuing public statements. Fans don't enjoy being misled, especially when it's painfully obvious something is in the works.

But the biggest question, at least among Buckeye fans, is concerning his ability to return Ohio State to its previous glory. After everything Meyer's gone through over the past few years, it's hard to imagine him having the same pull he once did.

His previously squeaky-clean reputation has definitely taken a hit since his leave of absence was announced in 2009. He'll need to regain some of that credibility before it's time to start talking about BCS Championships again.

That said, Ohio State had no choice but to sign Meyer. The school needed a marquee name to lead its resurgence and he fit the bill.

Hopefully he can answer these lingering questions during his introductory press conference and the focus can shift to football. That would be the best-case scenario for everybody involved.
