Bowl Projections: Why Stanford-Oklahoma State Would Be Perfect for Fiesta Bowl

Eric BallNov 27, 2011

Can I interest you in some offense?

That's what the higher ups at the Fiesta Bowl are asking if their dream scenario comes to fruition.

If No. 3 Oklahoma State can beat No. 10 Oklahoma, it's going to be the Cowboys vs. the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal in quite possibly the most exciting bowl game of the season.

Andrew Luck is the best college QB to come around in a long time and has the sort of running attack to give even the best defenses nightmares, yet the Cowboys are an even better unit statistically and have a QB with even better numbers. Right now, OSU is second in the nation in points scored (49.8) and in passing yards (401.6).

Brandon Weeden has thrown for 4111 yards and 34 TDs this season. Sure, Justin Blackmon is a big help (1241 yards, 15 TDs), but Weeden deserves all the credit. His decision-making skills are special and his quick release makes him deadly even with a pass rush coming at him.

Imagine the track meet that would ensue. Luck, who has 3170 yards and 35 TDs of his own had a monster performance in last year's Orange Bowl, and will surely cap off his college career on a high note.

The Cardinal "only" rank fifth in points (43.6) and 26th in passing yards per game (273), thanks in large part because of the terrific balance in the running game. Junior Stepfan Taylor has rushed for 1153 yards and eight TDs and Tyler Gaffney is averaging 6.4 yards per carry. They would gash the suspect Cowboys run defense.

All of this hype will be worthless if Oklahoma upsets OSU, but considering the game is being played in Stillwater, I think offense will prevail.

OSU-Stanford would yield a 45-44-like track meet. Offense reigns supreme for fans and I'd bet this game would surely turn the ratings meter. In the money-crazed BCS, that's all that matters.

Here's to hoping college football fans get what they want.
