Week 13 Waiver Wire: Caleb Hanie and More Mirages Fantasy Owners Should Avoid

Tim DanielsNov 28, 2011

Every week there are a couple players that come from off the radar to produce big fantasy weeks. It then becomes the job of a fantasy owner to determine if those breakout performers have staying power. With that in mind, here are three players who will fall back to Earth in Week 13.

QB: Caleb HanieChicago Bears

Hanie started his first game of the season with Jay Cutler recovering from a thumb injury and put up 17 fantasy points. He did throw three interceptions, however, and won't be playing from behind every week, so his attempts will decrease.

The Bears' best chance of winning games without Cutler is feeding the ball to Matt Forte early and often. Hanie is a capable replacement, but shouldn't be throwing the ball 36 times and certainly isn't a fantasy starter like his first start total would suggest.

Week 13 Projection: Nine fantasy points

WR: Brad SmithBuffalo Bills

Smith was signed by the Bills to play on special teams and add depth to their receiving corps. Before this week, he was a non-factor, so don't let his 13-point outing against Antonio Cromartie fool you into thinking he's suddenly worth a flex play.

Buffalo made it clear early on that they thought Smith had a big advantage against New York's No. 2 corner. He ended up with 77 yards and a touchdown. He'll return to his usual level of production next week against Tennessee.

Week 13 Projection: Three fantasy points

TE: Dustin KellerNew York Jets

Keller caught two touchdowns against the Bills after not catching one since Week 2. Owners can't depend on TDs because they are so variable from one week to the next, especially with low-target options like Keller.

Before Sunday, he hadn't scored more than six points since Week 3. Even at a weak position like tight end, that's a bandwagon to avoid. If you're going to take a chance on a mediocre TE, pick one that doesn't have Mark Sanchez as his quarterback.
