BCS National Championship: LSU vs. Alabama II? Really, Nobody Wants to See It

Rob GoldbergNov 27, 2011

LSU and Alabama represent the top two teams in the BCS standings, and unfortunately, this means we will most likely get a rematch for the BCS National Championship game.

The Tigers still must defeat Georgia in the SEC title game, but most analysts believe that LSU will still be able to play for a championship even with a loss.

Therefore, we are destined for a rematch of the Nov. 5 battle that yielded a 9-6 score. It was labeled the "game of the century," but fans were treated to a showcase of punts and missed field goals.

Is this really the best we can do?

In 2006, No. 1 Ohio State defeated No. 2 Michigan in a rivalry game that many believed was between the best two teams in the country. When the Wolverines suffered a heart-breaking 42-39 defeat on the road, many were calling for a rematch.

Florida was eventually given the opportunity to face Ohio State for the championship that season and dominated the Buckeyes by a score of 41-14. When Michigan faced USC in the Rose Bowl, they lost 32-18.

Fans thought that the two best teams were in the Big Ten that year, but other teams were rightfully given a chance to prove that theory wrong. What if this year is similar?

It is easy to use the "eye test" and say that LSU and Alabama are the two most talented teams based on how they look, but we do not really know which teams are better until they face each other. There are other one-loss teams worthy of a chance to show what they can do.

Oklahoma State was on pace to enter the BCS title game until it lost in double overtime to Iowa State. While it was an inexcusable loss, the Cowboys have enough wins this season that they should overcome one bad game.

Wins over Kansas State, Baylor and Texas are all impressive. The Texas Tech team that derailed Oklahoma's season lost by 60 points at home to the Cowboys. A win over the Sooners next week would be icing on the cake.

As far as the matchup with LSU, it would be a classic offense vs. defense battle. Oklahoma State is second in the nation in scoring at almost 50 points per game. Even if LSU really is at another level than everyone else in the country, fans would at least be treated to an entertaining game.

Besides the Cowboys, another team that should get a chance for to play for a championship is Stanford. Although the Cardinal had an embarrassing home loss to Oregon, the rest of the season has been solid.

The road win over USC is also much more impressive in hindsight, even if it will not be reflected in the rankings due to the Trojans' ineligibility.

Finally, there is no doubting how good both Alabama and LSU have been on defense this season. However, neither team has truly faced an elite quarterback. The best that either has faced at the position is Tyler Wilson of Arkansas.

Andrew Luck or Brandon Weeden would create a different matchup that the Tigers are not used to, and it might be what it is necessary to score on the tough defense.

It is possible that LSU and Alabama are the two best teams in the country, and a rematch would be the only way to crown a champion.

However, it is also possible that we are just recycling the same teams and not giving anyone else a chance. Hopefully the voters will make the right decision.
