What's Good About the Washington Nationals Signing Mark Teixeira Big?

Hayato UwaiCorrespondent IDecember 22, 2008

Mark Teixeira won't do the things on the picture ever again, if he signs with the Washington Nationals to a long term contract.

But if Teixeira signs with the Nationals for a big and long contract, many Mariners fans got to be happy about it. Here's why:

1) The Mariners don't have to face Teixeira again, except for the Interleague play.
The Mariners used to face Teixeira since he was on the Texas Rangers and the LA Angels. If he signs with the Nationals, the Mariners don't have to face him again.

2) The Angels won't be a dominant force. The Angels already lost their closer Francisco Rodriguez to free agency. If they lose Teixeira, they suffer a lot of damage to their offense. Also, the Angels withdrew their offer to Teixeira already so less chance for Tex to return to Anaheim.

3 Now, the Mariners can draft Stephen Strasburg in next year's draft. The Nationals don't have a lot of money. If they pay big on Mark Teixeira, then there is less chance for the Nationals to draft and sign Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg's agent is Scott Boras, so I'm sure that Boras wants a big contract for Strasburg as well. The Nationals can't afford two big contracts so the Nats might pass on to Strasburg and he might slip to our second overall selection.

So Mariners' fan should hope that Teixeira goes to Washington D.C. and gets a huge contract. Then, the Mariners would get future ace, Stephen Strasburg.
