BCS Bowl Projections: Why Houston Cougars Will Get Screwed

Richard LangfordNov 27, 2011

The Houston Cougars are about to get hosed by the BCS. This is a team that has steamrolled their way to an undefeated record and will not have a chance to play for the national title.

The argument is not that the selection process has failed the Cougars. Under the current system they don't deserve to a spot in the title game. They simply don't have the strength of schedule to warrant a shot at the title.

The problem is with the system. The Cougars could very well end the season without losing and not be champions. This doesn't happen in any other sport, and it shouldn't happen in college football.

College football needs a playoff and Houston is now the poster team for this argument.

Why Houston Doesn't Deserve a Shot Under Current System

The Cougars do not have one game against a ranked opponent. They scheduled themselves a quality opponent in UCLA, but UCLA did not hold up their end of the bargain. The Bruins have limped to a 6-6 record.

It would not be fair to one-loss teams with numerous victories against ranked teams for Houston to be selected over them.

Why the BCS is Screwing Houston

This Houston Cougar team has done everything they can. On their way to compiling an undefeated record, they have displayed one of the most prolific offenses that college football has ever seen.

They are first in the nation scoring just over 52 points a game. They are also No. 1 in passing yards per game at 449.7 yards per game.

While they didn't have a game against a Top 25 team, they did give fans a point of comparison with their last victory. Houston beat Tulsa, 48-16. That 32-point margin of victory is just one shy of Oklahoma's margin of victory against Tulsa and six points better than Oklahoma State's margin of victory.

Given the prolific nature of their stats and their results, it is clear that this team belongs on the field with the big boys. While they will likely earn a BCS bowl game birth to further prove that, it is a crime that this team has no opportunity to win a championship.
