Texans vs. Jaguars: 4 Halftime Adjustments for Houston

Evan AdrianNov 27, 2011

Matt Leinart, welcome back to the NFL

Houston devised a low-risk game plan for Leinart in the first half, and it paid off. The Texans have a 20-10 lead here at halftime.

Here are four second-half adjustments for Houston to take home this victory.

1. More Pressure on Blaine Gabbert: Two sacks on Gabbert in the first half just isn’t good enough. Houston must continue to pressure on the rookie and force him to make high-pressure decisions. Their goal for the second half should be forcing another turnover from Gabbert.

2. Stop MJD: Houston did a pretty good job of stopping MJD in the first half, limiting him to rushing yards and receiving. He did have one big 31-yard reception, but one big play and no touchdowns is something to be happy about. If they can keep him relatively bottled up in the second half, they can win this game.

3. Keep Feeding Foster and Tate: With Leinart playing QB, Houston knows they need to keep pounding the run. Lucky for them, they’ve got two of the best in the NFL in Foster and Tate. Look for at least a 3-2 run to pass ratio for the rest of this game.

4. Take Some Shots Downfield: With the run game working, Houston should look for the big play downfield. I know they don’t have too much trust in Leinart or Yates right now, but there’s been a lot of single coverage from Jacksonville. They should let him air it out if the right situation arises in the second half.
