BCS Rankings: The Biggest Flaw of Every BCS Championship Contender
There are only five teams that have a legit shot at playing for and winning this year's BCS National Championship.
With all of these teams having a chance at playing for the national championship, they all have one major flaw in their team. That flaw will hold them back from completing their goal of winning The Coaches' Trophy this year.
No team is perfect and anyone of these teams can lose. Here is how they could be defeated on Jan. 9th when they are playing for the national championship.
Stanford Cardinal
1 of 5Stanford's biggest flaw is that they are built around one player in Andrew Luck. When they lost to Oregon earlier this year, the Ducks forced Luck into two interceptions and the Cardinal offense into five turnovers.
The end result was a 23-point defeat by Oregon on Stanford. The loss crushed their chances at winning the Pac-12 and a spot in the BCS championship game.
Virginia Tech Hokies
2 of 5Virginia Tech's biggest flaw is their lack of a passing game. In their lone loss of the season against Clemson, they were only able to pass for 125 yards. Their inability to get a passing game going resulted in the Hokies scoring only three points.
Against a team like LSU, they would need another option if their running game were to be shut down.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
3 of 5Oklahoma State's biggest flaw is their defense. Their offense can put up points with ease. However, their defense has allowed 20 or more points in eight of their games this year.
If they would run into a great defense like Alabama or LSU, who both do a great job in shutting down teams, their defense would not be able to keep this team in the game.
Alabama Crimson Tide
4 of 5Alabama's biggest flaw is the lack of offense—outside of running back Trent Richardson. Richardson has led this Alabama rushing attack to 15th in the NCAA with 220 rushing yards per game. With 23 touchdowns this year, Richardson by far leads this Crimson Tide team in scoring.
However, when a defense can force Alabama to rely on their passing game, like against LSU, the Tide cannot find the end zone.
Against LSU, Richardson was held to only 89 rushing yards with 80 receiving yards. However, outside of his performance, the Alabama offense was nowhere to be found.
LSU Tigers
5 of 5LSU is the closest thing to a perfect team. However, just like the other four teams mentioned before, they have one glaring weakness. That weakness was revealed against Alabama, when The Tigers had their passing game eliminated.
This LSU team is built to be successful in running the ball. However, against Alabama they had to rely on their passing game. Having to use their passing game to win almost cost The Tigers a chance at winning the game.
If a team like Alabama can shut down their running game again in the national championship game, it may result in The Tigers losing out on winning their third national championship in front of their fans.
