Cardinals vs. Rams: 5 Adjustments Arizona Must Make in the 2nd Half

Aliko CarterNov 27, 2011

John Skelton is getting another chance to prove his mettle for the Arizona offense. He had a pretty poor outing last weekend, getting pulled in the third quarter. However, that was against the division-leading San Francisco 49ers. This week, they are on the road against another division rival, but in a much more winnable game. Here are five adjustments the Cardinals must make to take down the Rams in the second half.

1. Stop Steven Jackson

Early in this game, the Rams offense has been pretty reliant on Steven Jackson. He's had a long run of 19 yards and has been a big presence on first down for St. Louis.  The Cards' front four and secondary have to ensure that Jackson has nowhere to go on handoffs.

2. Pressure the Returner

Nick Miller returned a punt 88 yards early in the first quarter. On their next punt, Dave Zastudil made sure Miller would not have a chance to make it out of Rams territory by landing it out-of-bounds on the 25-yard line. Zastudil should be able to pin the Rams' runners behind the 20-yard line and count on his special teams stoppers to to their jobs.

3. John Skelton's Accuracy

Skelton has already been picked off and has thrown a number of passes nowhere near his intended receivers. He's got to get rid of his jitters on the road and throw with more determination if the Cards are going to get to the end zone.

4. More Beanie Wells

Wells came to run today. His 100-yard 1st-half performance bodes well for the Cards' running game in the second half. Arizona should rely on him as long as he's able, and who knows how long that will actually be?

5. Fitz

Larry Fitzgerald has not caught a pass today. The Cardinals simply do not win when Fitzgerald is not involved. He's their best offensive player, and needs to be included. He's been targeted a few times, but the Cards' offense must put 100 percent into every attempt thrown his way.
