BCS Rankings: Virginia Tech Most Deserving of BCS Title Matchup with LSU
The No. 5 Virginia Tech Hokies are the most deserving one-loss team of a BCS National Championship Game matchup with the undefeated No. 1 LSU Tigers.
"Projected BCS top five standings after week 13:
1. LSU (12-0)
2. Alabama (11-1)
3. Oklahoma State (10-1)
4. Virginia Tech (11-1)
5. Stanford (11-1)
"
No. 2 Alabama had its chance and blew it, at home. It should be completely out of the picture. It didn't even win its division, let alone conference.
How can it play for a national championship when it isn't even the best team in the Southeast?
The other one-loss team in the discussion, No. 3 Oklahoma State, plays no defense and it finally caught up with the Cowboys last week at Iowa State. A loss next Saturday to rival Oklahoma will give them their second loss of the year and effectively eliminate them.
The Sooners would be Big 12 champions with two losses on their resume.
And then there is Virginia Tech. The only one-loss team with a legitimate case for a BCS title game berth.
The Hokies have won seven straight games and are headed to Charlotte to avenge their early-October loss to No. 17 Clemson.
A win on Dec. 3 will give them the ACC crown and a 12-1 record. The nation's seventh-ranked scoring defense should then be the favorite to challenge LSU's perfect season this January in New Orleans.
What makes anyone think Alabama is going to beat LSU in Louisiana if it couldn't beat the Tigers in Tuscaloosa?
The Hokies and their dominant defense would be champions of their conference, one win better than the Tide and have only one loss to a team not named LSU.
Alabama's argument simply doesn't hold up. A rematch between the two SEC powerhouses would be a slap in the face to college football fans and more so to Virginia Tech.
The Hokies have earned the No. 2 ranking through 12 games and after Saturday's ACC title game in North Carolina, they will have punched their ticket to New Orleans.
