Colt McCoy: Lack of Offensive Weapons Means Jury Is Still out on Browns QB

Jon DoveNov 27, 2011

Colt McCoy and the Cleveland Browns are struggling through a disappointing season. Nobody expected the Browns to contend for a playoff spot, but many expected them to show some promising signs toward the future.

Last season, the Browns offense showed a lot of promise. They had emerging star Peyton Hillis and McCoy, who was showing potential. However, the Browns did very little to surround McCoy with the weapons necessary to succeed.

The biggest offensive addition was second-round draft pick Greg Little. Little has a lot of upside but is still learning the ins and outs of the NFL game. He would have a hard time earning snaps in many of the NFL wide receiving corps.

McCoy's other wide receiver options include Joshua Cribbs, Mohamed Massaquoi and Jordon Norwood.

None of these players are top-level options, and all are more suited for a reserve role. It is very difficult for a young quarterback to find success without talented targets.

The Cleveland Browns' rushing attack has also struggled to aid their quarterback.

Peyton Hillis has missed a significant amount of time with injuries, as has backup Montario Hardesty. This has left Chris Ogbonnaya has the main rushing threat. Young quarterbacks need a strong running game to help loosen coverage.

At this point, the jury is still out on Colt McCoy's future. He has shown signs of promise but has yet to lock down the long-term starting job. While some of the blame is on McCoy himself, he needs to be given some slack because of the lack of surrounding talent.

McCoy's future might be taking a positive turn, as he has improved in each of the last several weeks.

On the season, McCoy is completing only 59 percent of his passes. However, he is completing 68 percent of his passes in the past four games.

A strong end to the season will go a long way in McCoy's attempt to lock down the starting job.
