Fantasy Football Week 16 Waiver Wire

Michael WhooleyDec 21, 2008

Though there is still one week to play in the NFL, the season has come to a close for most fantasy football leagues. For those of you out there playing in your final games in week 17, we bring to you our final waiver wire of the 2008 season. There are some good nuggets here to help pad your roster so be sure check out the players in the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Waiver Wire below to see how they can help your team.

QUARTERBACKS

Seneca Wallace (Seattle Seahawks)

With nine touchdowns and one interception filling in for the injured Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Seneca Wallace has proven he can be a solid starter in the NFL. Over the last three weeks he has four touchdowns and no interceptions while completing 67.9 percent of his passes.

In the final week of the season, Wallace will face a weak Arizona defense that stopped playing hard the minute it won the NFC West. He makes for a solid play in any size league.

RUNNING BACKS

Cedric Benson (Cincinnati Bengals)

It’s easy to make fun of Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson but this past Sunday's performance against the Cleveland Browns was no laughing matter. In the win, Benson rushed 38 times for 171 yards against a Cleveland defense that held the Bengals in check in their previous meeting.

The Bengals and Benson have a favorable matchup this week against the Kansas City Chiefs, who are 30th in run defense and points allowed.

Kevin Smith (Detroit Lions)

This past weekend against the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith had his second 100-yard game of the season as he rushed 24 times for 111 yards and one touchdown. He’s now 116 yards shy of 1,000 yards in his rookie season. This week he’s got a favorable matchup as the Lions take on the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers can’t stop the run as they are 27th in rushing yards allowed and 25th in points allowed.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Derrick Mason (Baltimore Ravens)

A large part of the reason Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has been successful as a rookie is because of the play of wide receiver Derrick Mason. On the season Mason has 74 receptions for 960 yards and five touchdowns and he’s got touchdowns in three of the team’s last four games.

Against the Jacksonville Jaguars, this week Mason should have another good game. The Jaguars are 19th in passing yards allowed and 20th in points allowed.

TIGHT ENDS

Visanthe Shiancoe (Minnesota Vikings)

The transition from Gus Frerotte to Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback has not hurt the value of Minnesota Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe. Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, Shiancoe had seven catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

The Vikings do have a tough game against the New York Giants this week but quality at the tight end position has been hard to come by this season so if you need help, don’t be afraid to look at Shiancoe.

Owen Daniels (Houston Texans)

The touchdowns haven’t come often this season for Houston Texans tight end Owen Daniels as he’s caught just two through 16 games. However, the last three weeks as the offense has picked up, Owens has caught a combined 17 passes for 217 yards.

This past weekend against the Oakland Raiders, he caught seven passes for 111 yards. Feel free to take a look at Daniels for week 17.

DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons defense is one that gives up a lot of yards but not many points. The Falcons are 10th in the league in points allowed at 19.9. The reason they’re a good waiver wire pickup this week is because they’re playing against the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams got running back Steven Jackson back, but they’re still a weak offense, of which Atlanta can take advantage. St. Louis is 31st in points scored and 27th in total yards.
